Development of notions of binary asteroids. (original) (raw)

Abstract
The problem of binary or more complicated structure of asteroids is considered on the basis of investigations reported in a period from 1901 to March 1993. Variable techniques of observation - occultation of stars by asteroids, photometrical light curves, speckle interferometry, and radiolocation of asteroids - point to the duality of some asteroids. A satellite of asteroid 243 Ida was detected in observations performed from the spacecraft Galileo. Frequency analysis of photometric observations of asteroids permits to find rotation periods of components of binary asteroids. The complex structure of comets as well as the availability of double craters are indirect evidences for the binary asteroid existence. The theory of gravitation shows a stability of satellite orbits of asteroids. A list of possible binary asteroids is given.
