Our future is bright; let's make our flag bright ​Our Goal: to create a movement which will lead Victoria to run an open, crowd-sourced flag competition in order to choose a good design for our deserving city. We acknowledge that there is an unofficial logo-flag in use, but we think Victoria is more than a corporate symbol. Our first step is to begin the discussion; we will petition council to officially run a competition in the coming months. The flag chosen should be available for purchase by the public, represent its people, and maintain good design principles.​A flag serves not only to represent its people to the world, but to engage citizens in design. Engage and Empower the Community. Through this competition everyone will have the opportunity to engage with their city in a meaningful way through design submission and discussion.Nurture Our Arts. This is a golden opportunity for artists to practice design and win money (if their design is chosen). Young artists are warmly encouraged to submit designsDemonstrate Regional Leadership. Victoria can show itself to be a forward thinking, design-savvy city and to continue the mission started by cities like Portland (flag pictured below). By demonstrating our attention to detail we'll send the message that Victoria is a city on the way up. Innovate and Lead. Flags provide an outlet for creativity, but they are more than just a piece of cloth: flags provide easy souvenirs, and can lend themselves to almost any design project such as a bench, a coffee mug, a T-shirt, or a scarf. Let's lay the foundation of creativity together! Secondary city flag (future city banner) Step 1 This is the beginning of a movement. In the coming months we will propose to City Council the idea of an open competition to choose a flag for Victoria. The competition would involve an honourarium, online submissions, and selection process probably including a committee-made shortlist. We'd love to hear your ideas about what our flag should look like and how we should choose it. Our first goal is to create a buzz; we want people to be exited for design! A flag is nothing if the people it represents haven't had a say in how it looks. We're looking to make sure our flag represents us all. If you're interested in helping reach the next step in Victoria's history you can help not only by liking and sharing us on social media, but by striking up a conversation with your neighbour, your parent, your spouse, or your co-worker. This should include everybody because it's a flag for everybody. Design and Criteria ​Although it is to early to submit a flag yourself, it's never too early to start discussing potential designs. The following is a list of criteria and suggestions for you eventual submission.Your submission must follow the 5 basic principles* of flag design; it mu st​​be simple; a child must be able to draw it from memory,use meaningful symbolism; each element must represent an aspect of the city,be distinctive or related; it must not resemble any other flag too closely,use 2-3 basic colours, andnot contain any lettering or seals.​Your submission must contain/be ​one element directly from Victoria's coat of arms (pictured directly below).a digital file ; it must have a ratio of 1:2 and be 600ppi (pixels per inch).an email attachment with your name, address, postal code, and a write-up explaining your design and what each element represents.child-appropriate symbolism.Your submission might containa representation of Victoria as the capital of B.C.a representation of Victoria's location on the West Coast.a representation of Victoria's history.an element representing (either implicitly or explicitly) the First Nations groups in the lower-Island region.A royal crown. Note: any such design would need to be registered with the Canadian Heraldic Authority, except the banner of arms (the middle bit of the coat of arms) to which we are entitled). NOTE: winning design may be altered if City government wishes to comply with the requirements of the Heraldic Authority of Canada.​**Who can submit?**We propose that there should be no requirements based on age or location. Because of sometimes arbitrary devisions between the City of Victoria and the other capital region district cities and the difficulty in proving former residence in the city, we think that it would be better to leave voting and submission open to all---provided they only submit once, and provided they describe where they live.Voting criteria will be the same as submission criteria.​Criteria are
