Introduction

The Knuth Digital Archive Project was started in June 2005 as an informal project between Dr. Donald Knuth, Professor Emeritus of The Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University and Fellow of The Computer Museum, and a volunteer from the Computer History Museum, namely me. This project was organized and overseen by Dr. Bernard Peuto, Trustee of the Computer History Museum. The project was discussed with Dr. Len Shustek, Chairman of the Board of the Computer History Museum. Paul McJones provided advice and feedback.

The goal was to digitize a large percentage of the documents in Dr. Knuth's personal collection, focusing on his writings and other computer history material. This was designed as a pilot project to develop experience on scanning loaned documents so that we can predict resource requirements for other collections.

Since the project is now approaching its two year mark, I felt that it was time to collect and organize all of the work to date into the First Contribution Compilation and formally submit it to the Computer History Museum.

Dr. Knuth has an organizational system where all documents have letter-number identifier attached, and the documents are stored in boxes by topic. These identifiers are used throughout this collection. There are 106 identified documents, but each may have multiple parts, or an attached letter or notes. The documents range from reference cards to letters to manuals to computer listings. The oldest dated document is 1923.

There is an index html file in the top level directory that describes the documents and links to the pdf files. The TIFF files created by scanning were assembled into pdf image files.

I have provided sorted lists by document identifier, title, first author, computer, year, and storage box label.

Scanning Notes

Scanners:

  1. Plustek OpticBook 3600 that I own, it can scan about 9 by 12 inches. The unique feature is that it can scan within 3 millimeters of the edge of the scanner, allowing flat scans of bound pages, CHM has since purchased one.
  2. Epson 10000XL, two are owned by CHM. It can scan about 12 by 18 inches which is required for scanning computer listings and blueprints.

Scanning Formats:

  1. Black and white text and images: 400 dpi, one bit, stored in a TIFF file with lossless Group 4 fax compression.
  2. Grayscale:text and images, handwritten notes: 400 dpi, 8 bits, stored in a TIFF file with no compression.
  3. Color images: 400 dpi, 24 bits, stored in a TIFF file with no compression.

Document Assembly, using Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional

  1. TIFF image files were assembled in correct order into pdf files
  2. No OCR was attempted.
  3. Rotated text blocks (from misaligned copying) were not corrected.
  4. Page image choices (in order):
    1. One bit TIFF file
    2. One bit TIFF file with grayscale image or handwritten note image stamped on top.
    3. Grayscale TIFF file
    4. Color TIFF file
  5. Generally, the “reduce file size” function was run on the pdf file before saving it.
  6. Some blueprints were scanned in sections and pieced together with an image editor.

'The LARC compiler “was beautifully designed, very poorly documented, and patched at the machine level so we couldn't recompile it or reassemble it.” Betty Holbertson, Annals of the History of Computing 4(3) July 1982.'

Compiler developed by CSC for the LARC from FORTRAN II. Legendary for its power and expressibility as well as its speed. Had advanced array sorting features - perhaps a benefit from CSC having just finished written FACT?
Betty Snyder expressed dissatisfaction with the delivery of the compiler because the source was assembler patched and the documentation poor even though the compiler was outstanding. From Website:

UNIVAC LARC (1960)

Special solid state computer built by UNIVAC as a division of Sperry Rand for Livermore - one of the most advanced computers of its time, featuring many system components that influence modern computer design. Because of cost blowouts in the project, the Navy agreed to purchase a second one for the David Taylor Model Basin. Pres Eckert was substantially involved in its design. The contract UNIVAC won with the AEC was over IBM, who got instead the Los Alamos project for STRETCH - there was considerable rivalry between the STRETCH and LARC projects. From: Website:
