This is a synthetic collection consisting of typescripts, manuscripts and correspondence by and about the author. The typescripts include poems by the author, reviews in holograph and typescript by Randall Jarrell, and an essay Arthur Mizener. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, dating from 1923 to 1981, to Kay Boyle, Maurice Firuski, Alfred Kazin, Vladimir Nabokov, Muriel Rukeyser, May Sarton, Frances Steloff, Louis Untermeyer, and others. Also included are letters relating to the author, dating from 1925 to 1975, between various correspondents including Kay Boyle, Henry Seidel Canby, Maurice Firuski, and others. There are letters to MacLeish from Kathleen Millay, Herbert Mitgang, Vladimir Nabokov, and Louis Untermeyer, dating from 1942 to 1975.
