This is a synthetic collection consisting of manuscripts and correspondence by and about the author. The manuscript materials include autograph drafts of stories, novels, and essays, and autograph transcriptions of poems. The correspondence includes letters from the author, dating from 1847 to 1880, to Cassius Clay, George Eliot, James R. Osgood, Rebecca Wetherill, and others. There are also letters relating to the author, dating from 1853 to [1869], between various correspondents including Elizabeth Leveson-Gower, Charles Beecher, Elihu Burritt, Calvin Ellis Stowe, Lady Georgiana Cavendish Howard Carlisle, W. M. Rossetti, and others. There are letters to Stowe from Henry Ward Beecher, Lyman Beecher, Lady Anna Isabella Milbanke Byron, George William Carlisle, Joseph Durham, Amos Lawrence, James Russell Lowell, Wendell Phillips, John Ruskin, and others, dating from [1851?] to 1860.
