Biographical/historical information

George Platt Lynes was a commercial and fine art photographer active primarily between the 1930s-1940s. His formative years were spent in Paris and New York City; he opened his first photography studio in the latter city in 1932. He is best known for his photographs of dancers and gay men, though he also photographed a number of significant writers, actors, and musicians.

Scope and arrangement

The collection consists of 14 silver gelatin portraits taken by George Platt Lynes between approximately 1939 and 1950 of various classical musicians. Musicians photographed include Webster Aitken, Aaron Copland, Lotte Lehmann, Thomas Schippers, Gian Carlo Menotti, Arnold Schoenberg, and Igor Stravinsky.
