So called "Intelligent Design" goes down! [Dec. 20th, 2005|12:24 pm]atomicat
Previous Entry Flag Next Entry [mood** |jubilantjubilant] [music** Honest John - Dave]Woohoo! The verdict is in! Thank BOB they left this one to a judge rather than a simple-as-shit jury. Headline: "Judge rules against 'intelligent design' in class". http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn8493Now hopefully some of these religious arseholes will SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!Fact: The earth is older than 5600 years.Fact: Noah did NOT use pterodactyls to collect the specimens from all over the earth and brontosaurai as labor animals to build the ark.Fact: The domain of Complex non-linear forumulae is aleph-one.Oh, guess that last one needs some explaining. Phase changes are Complex non-linear formula. Phase changes are when one material changes state and a different set of mathematical formulae come into play. Dig: When you heat a magnet, eventually it will loose it's magnetism. This is a phase change. Another typical phase change is when materials freeze or liquify. Now here's the kicker... The DOMAIN of the functions, that is, the set of numbers included in the functions, is Aleph-one. Aleph-one is the second set of Cantorian trans-finite numbers. Infinitely infinite. The Mandelbrot set is the simplest and most well known Complex non-linear function set. Each point on the infinite Mandelbrot is associated with a Julia set, which is also infinite. Picture an infinite book with infinite pages. That's the ammount of Information contained in non-linear dynamic phase changes. Let's return to magnetism. The following comes from the documentation in the best Fractal generator EVER.... the incredible Fractint program. This is the description for Magnet fractals... These fractals use formulae derived from the study of hierarchical lattices, in the context of magnetic renormalisation transformations. This kinda stuff is useful in an area of theoretical physics that deals with magnetic phase-transitions (predicting at which temperatures a given substance will be magnetic, or non-magnetic). In an attempt to clarify the results obtained for Real temperatures (the kind that you and I can feel), the study moved into the realm of Complex Numbers, aiming to spot Real phase-transitions by finding the intersections of lines representing Complex phase-transitions with the Real Axis. The first people to try this were two physicists called Yang and Lee, who found the situation a bit more complex than first expected, as the phase boundaries for Complex temperatures are (surprise!) fractals. So guess what... when you plot these formulae what do we see? Why our old friend the Mandelbrot of coursehttp://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d72/AtomicNixon/Graphics/FRACT002.jpghttp://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d72/AtomicNixon/Graphics/FRACT004.jpgBeautiful! So what does this say. Well, when you have a system that includes phase changes, you have an infinite amount of complexity just waiting to be found. Take Titan... There are things freezing, thawing, evaporating, condensing etc etc. There are intense magnetic fields that sweep through everything, further churning the mix. These are perfect conditions for life to evolve. The complexity of the materials means nothing the Complexity of the formulae is everything. Remember... Aleph-One!BTW, there is a difference between 'complex' and 'Complex'. Complex, capitalised, does not mean complicated. It refers to Complex numbers, which have two parts... Real and Imaginary. Formulae which use Complex numbers aren't all that difficult, they end up making simple X * Y calculations into polynomials, that's all.So there you go. One final note on entropy. Yes, entropy in a closed system does tend to increase... but the solar system is NOT a closed system. We have a very non-entropic energy source, the sun. We do not 'consume' energy by the way, we consume low entropic states and convert them to high entropic states. One single photon has one possible energy level. Low entropy. We take that photon and through the process of photosynthesis, and eating the plants, turn it into many photons (radiant heat energy in this case) which have many possible states, high entropy. The sum of energy in our bodies remains the same....and then there's that pesky Aleph-One creature always lurking lurking lurking. Here's a book review by someone who just doesn't quite get what Paul Davies is saying in his excellent book "The Fifth Miracle". Doesn't quite get the math I guess. But hell, how many people know Cantorian trans-finite set theory, Complex non-linear functions, and information theory. It's interesting that such a decent review of a book that completely destroys Intelligent Design arguements should be reviewed on a site that promotes Intelligent Design. Go figure.http://www.arn.org/docs/johnson/fifthmiracle.htmFor further reading, check out Wikipedia's entry on the subject:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dynamical_systems_and_differential_equations_topicsTo get the best fractal generator in the world, go here:http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/fractint.htmlIn this holiday season I dance on the grave of religion.Atomicat

From: _(Anonymous)_2006-04-28 01:24 pm (UTC) (Link) Nothing wrong with religion, as long as you don't try to substitute faith for facts (which everyone seems to be doing these days.) It's probably not a great idea to make science (or any particular field of enquiry) into an idealogy for that matter. They're not mututally exclusive. That's all I'll say on the matter. (At least today.) That was me, BTW; forgot to log in. (Ooopsies.)
