Accomplished comics writers Tom DeFalco (Spider-Man), Peter David (Hulk), Ann Nocenti (Daredevil), Barbara Slate (You Can Do a Graphic Novel) and Danny Fingeroth (How to Create Comics From Script to Print) show and tell you how to write comics and graphic novels, going from initial idea to outline to script to finished story. Plus, the panelists will answer your questions about both the creative and business sides of the comics writing profession, including how to find an artist to work with (hint: a comics convention is the number one place!) and how to write exciting dialogue!

Self-publishing creator, Victor Dandridge, heads a forum-style discussion on the practices of self-publishing comic books. Just in time for the 75th anniversary of the 1940 debut of comics pioneer Will Eisner’s iconic character The Spirit comes the revised, lavishly illustrated edition of Bob Andelman’s Eisner biography, Will Eisner: A Spirited Life, published by Raleigh’s own TwoMorrows publishing. Bob will read from the book and discuss Eisner’s career. Plus, the TwoMorrows crew, including editors Michael Eury (Back Issue magazine), Eric Nolen-Weathington (the Modern Masters series) and Danny Fingeroth (co-editor with Roy Thomas of The Stan Lee Universe) will be on hand to talk about what’s coming up from TwoMorrows.

The Art of Saturday Morning Cartoon Production with Animator/Director Tom Cook Wizard World is proud to present world-renown animator Tom Cook (Tarzan; Flash Gordon; He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; She-Ra Princess of Power) to Chicago! This panel will be a demonstration of the steps taken to bring an idea from script to screen. Cook will begin with a short story of how he became an animator back in the late 1970s and then describe the different departments in an animation studio and what they do to move the development of the cartoon forward. Tom will have a few scenes he has worked on over the years on video and then will open the floor for questions about either the process or any other question you may have. So come out and see first-hand how your favorite cartoons were made!

Join one of the movies’ stars, Sean Astin, as he discusses his time as Samwise Gamgee as well as the rest of his impressive list of credits that include The Goonies, Rudy and the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon.

1:30–2:15PM SPOTLIGHT ON ROB LIEFELD (ROOM 306A) Rob Liefeld is an American comic book writer, illustrator, and publisher, a prominent artist in the 1990s. In the early ‘90s, self-taught artist Liefeld became prominent due to his work on Marvel Comics' The New Mutants and later X-Force. In 1992, he and several other popular Marvel illustrators left the company to found Image Comics, which started a wave of comic books owned by their creators rather than by publishers. The first book published by Image Comics was Rob's Youngblood #1. His creations Deadpool, Cable, Youngblood and X-Force helped change the comic book landscape and remain staples of both Marvel and Image comics. Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society) moderates.

We’ll look at the different paths of fandom (TV, film, comics, video games, cosplay) and rate how well they portray race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic class, and physical ability. We’ll also discuss how our group, The Color of Fandom, fosters a diverse and inclusive geek experience for the Triangle area.

Dr. Eric Spana, a Duke Biology Professor, discusses the genetics of the Wizarding gene in the Harry Potter Universe. By examining the evidence in the books and films, he finds that wizarding is a dominant, autosomal gain-of-function mutation. He goes on to calculate the mutation rate in the muggle population and proposes a new theory for the occurrence of Squibs. Fun for all ages and you just might learn something.
