Amazon Publishing titles take 15 spots in Top 20 Kindle Best-Sellers of 2017 - Self-publishing news (original) (raw)

Amazon Publishing imprints have swept through the Top 20 Kindle Best-Sellers of 2017 so far with 15 books on the list, nearly doubling the performance of 2016 when the company’s titles took eight places in the Top 20.

Thomas & Mercer leads the way with seven titles, closely followed by Lake Union Publishing which has six books in the Top 20, with one apiece from Montlake Romance and AmazonCrossing.

Thomas & Mercer is Amazon Publishing’s imprint for mystery, thrillers and suspense while Lake Union specializes in contemporary and historical fiction. Montlake is the firm’s leading romance imprint and AmazonCrossing publishes works in translation.

Self-published author Sarah A Denzil is in eighth place in the Top 20 with the massive hit Silent Child. J K Rowling’s Pottermore company, which I classify as an independent publisher, takes third with Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone.

That leaves major traditional publishers with just three titles in the Top 20 and remarkably all three are backlist books, with two of them getting massive boosts during the year from TV series and/or news events — The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and 1984 by George Orwell.

The Letter by Kathryn Hughes was initially self-published in 2013 when it became a best-seller and was then picked up by Hachette’s Headline.
