Tourist/Visitor Information about Brora Village – Sutherland – visit or stay !

Brora, in the North East Highlands in Sutherland is perfectly placed. The village is remote enough to have you wake up in a quiet, magnificent environment surrounded by the full range of expected typical traditional Highland scenes yet only an hour from the capital, Inverness, with its highly rated restaurants and an exciting arts and music scene. An hour’s drive north gets you to the bustling seaside town Wick, then ½ hour to other famous Highland destinations of John O’Groats and Thurso, and so onto the Orkney ferry where you could witness several millennia of ancient history in just a few hours. But why bother leaving the mainland or going into the capital when a 10 mile radius supports all the activities, sights and stunning scenery for a relaxing break.

Surfs up, Harbour Shut!

The village is named after the Brora river which runs down from Loch Brora, a two mile walk inland. When the surf’s up the estuary mouth, which doubles as the harbour entrance, has up to 10ft waves that prevent small fishing boats leaving. This is fine for the surfing community – Brora has great surfing!
