“Amour’s” strong showing — five Oscar nominations for Michael Haneke’s film about an elderly French couple facing death — included a best actress nod for Emmanuelle Riva, at 85 the oldest actress nominee in Academy history.

In a quick phone interview from New York, where she was visiting, she said she learned about her nomination just minutes after she woke up on Thursday.

“I heard cries of joy and compliments from people near me,” Ms. Riva said from her room at the Pierre. “I was thrilled, I was happy for the film, for Haneke, for the entire team because it is an extraordinary film,” she said.

“How can you not be thrilled about such news?” she added. “The Oscars are extremely important.”
