The Loftus Cliffe papers include items dating from Cliffe’s service in William Howe’s 46th Regiment of Foot between 1776 and 1778. The letters detail his participation in campaigns in the mid-Atlantic theater of the American Revolutionary War, and include descriptions of the Battles of Long Island, Trenton, Brandywine, and Germantown. The remaining letters and documents relate to his family in New Ross, Ireland, efforts to secure an apprenticeship for his son, and his departure from England to serve in India in 1784.

The Clements Library wishes to thank the University of Michigan Library Information Technology, Digital Content and Collections unit for their vital work in making this collection digitally available.
