| Greetings & Salutations! I come bearing a new theme: Hybrid Animals!!!Hybrid animals are pretty cool, as I've learned. Sometimes they look like mom, sometimes dad, sometimes a mix of both, and sometimes neither! They can be random in the wild, an accident in a zoo, or bred specifically for work, food, a new look, or even a new type of pet. Some a pretty common like the mule, some are growing in popularity like the beefalo, some a rare like the liger, and some there's only one of like the pumapard! I only picked real, documented hybrids. There are theories that some animals could produce young, but haven't or there are only rumors.Application Stamps & InformationA Little Explanation: Some of these animals are known by more than one name, for example the Caraval is also known as the Cara-serval, I put both names on the stamp with and OR (voters can use either.)Some hybrids' names depend on which animal was the dad, with his name coming first: coydog (daddy Coyote) and dogote (daddy Dog). On the stamp, I put both with an AND.However, some hybrids are different and so I made two stamps with ♂ for dad and ♀ for mom. The mule (daddy donkey) is larger than the hinny (daddy horse) and the liger (daddy lion) is gentler than the highly aggressive tigon (daddy tiger).Some animals only have one name and don't matter who was the father and mother.Beefalo_cattle + buffalo (bison)_Mixing the American bison with the cow started when the buffalo population was threatened, but has also boosted American beef production. Because of the profits that beefalo meat brings, this species will survive. Cross a cow with a buffalo and you get a Beefalo, a hybrid that produces meat lower in fat and cholesterol than normal beef. Beefalo meat is, naturally, hard to find – only a few grocery stores in Seattle carry it. And if you want a real, accredited Beefalo, it must be three-eighths bison, five-eighths bovine.Geep “The Toast of Botswana”_male sheep + goat_An accidental mating between a female goat and male sheep in Africa resulted in an animal which had long, goat-like legs but a heavyset sheep’s body, while its coat was a mixture of hair and wool.Iron Age Pig_domestic pig + wild boar_Domestic Tamworth pigs are crossbred with wild boar to create ‘Iron Age Pigs’. The hybrids are tamer than wild boar but less tractable than domestic swine and generally become specialist pork sausages. Most of them are bred for the specialist meat trade. Wolphins_false killer whale + dolphin_It all began in December 2004, when a female calf was born to a false killer whale and an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin at Sea Life Park Hawaii. The calf grew to the size of a whale, but her features are dolphin-like. She then mated with a bottlenose dolphin; her third and only calf, a female, has thus survived. Two exist in captivity, although there have been occasional reports of rare (and adorable) specimens being sighted in the wild. A False Killer Whale is one of the largest members of the dolphin family and shares characteristics with the more famous black & white Orca. In size colour and shape a wholphin is midway between the two parents and that even applies to its teeth; a bottlenose has 88 teeth, a false killer whale 44 but a wholphin has 66.Grolar Bear (Pizzly Bear)_grizzly + polar bear_Also known as the pizzly bear, the grolar bear is result of a mating between a polar bear and a grizzly bear. Though rare - the hybrid only is a possibility in the far north where the species overlap, and the two bears generally are wary of each other in the wild - the grolar bear does occur naturally. In 2006, one was discovered and confirmed through DNA testing in Canada.Cama_camel + llama_Researchers in the the Middle East crossed a camel with a llama to form a cama, which has the cloven hooves of a llama and the short ears and long tail of a camel (but no hump). Initially a product of scientific tinkering, researchers hoped the cama would be the perfect pack animal, with more strength than a llama but more agreeable than a camel.Hybrid PheasantAlso the hybrids between the Common Pheasant and domestic fowl are larger than either of their parents, as are those produced between the Common Pheasant and hen Golden Pheasant. Spurs are absent in hybrids of the former type, although present in both parents. The Golden Phesant has commonly been crossed with the similar Lady Amherst’s Pheasant. The result is a hybrid with distinguished colors from its parents.Mule_male donkey + horse_Mules (donkey stallion/horse mare) are bred as draught animals. Male mules are sterile, but fertile female mules (mollies) sometimes occur and can be mated to either a horse of donkey stallion.Hinny_male horse + donkey_The hinny (horse stallion/donkey mare hybrid) is less common. The head of a hinny is more horse-like than the head of a mule. They are harder to produce than mules as stallion/jenny matings are less likely to result in pregnancy. Hinnies are smaller and finer boned than mules.Zorse (Hebra)_male zebra + horse (male horse + zebra)_Zorses are a more common hybrid, often bred in Africa to trek Mount Kenya. As the name suggests, zorses are half-zebra, half-horse, and are much stronger than typical horses. Though most zorses don't look this fancy, this zorse, named Eclyse, gained media attention in 2007 for her unique coat.Zedonk (Zebret)_male zebra + donkey (male donkey + zebra)_A zedonk foal was recently born in Dahlonega, Georgia at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve. With a zebra father and a donkey mother, the zedonk sports black stripes on her legs and a donkey-like stature. It's very rare for zebras and donkeys to mate, but it's happened before — at the very least once in 2005 and three times in the 1970s, according to the Gainesville Times. Such offspring are called zedonks, zonkeys, zebrinnies or even zebrulas.Zony_zebra + pony_A zony is the offspring of a zebra stallion and a pony mare. Medium size pony mares are preferred in order to produce riding zonies, but zebras have been crossed with smaller pony breeds such as the Shetland resulting in so-called "Zetlands". It is a zebroid: this term refers to any hybrid equine with zebra ancestry.Zetland_zebra + Shetland pony_Cumbria seems an unlikely location for a hybrid to spring up but this was exactly what happened at Eden Ostrich World when a zebra was left in a field with a Shetland pony in 2001. The result inspired a tune called ‘Song for the Zorse’ by The Coronets.Wolfdog_dog + wolf_A wolf-dog hybrid (also called a wolf hybrid or wolfdog) is a canid hybrid resulting from the mating of a wolf and a dog. Hybridization in the wild usually occurs near human habitations where wolf density is low and dogs are common. Hybrids display a wide variety of appearances, ranging from a resemblance to dogs without wolf blood to animals that are often mistaken for full-blooded wolves. There are at least seven regonized breeds, inculding the Saarlooswolfhond, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, and Lupo Italiano.Coydog (Dogote)_male coyote + dog (male dog + coyote)_A coydog is the hybrid offspring of a male coyote (Canis latrans) and a female dog (Canis lupus familiaris). Together they are genetically capable of producing fertile young. The dogote, a similar hybrid, is the result of breeding a male domestic dog with a female coyote. Where the cross-breeding of animals is concerned, the father's species gives the first part of the offspring's name.Dogotes are fairly rare in the wild, in part because female coyotes are fertile for only about 60 days out of the year. Wild coydogs and dogotes can cause problems for humans, as they allegedly have the cunning of coyotes but lack their natural fear of humans.Coywolf_coyote + wolf_Coywolves have the wolf characteristics of pack hunting and aggression and the coyote characteristics of lack of fear of human-developed areas. They seem to be bolder and more intelligent than regular coyotes.Leopon_leopard + lion_The leopon's head is similar to that of a lion, while its body carries similarities to a leopard's. While the animals have reportedly been bred in Indian and at zoos in Europe and Japan, no leopons are known to exist today. A Leopon is the result of breeding a male leopard and a female lion. The head of the animal is similar to that of a lion while the rest of the bodies carries similarities to leopards. The most successful breeding programme was at the Koshien Hanshin Park in Nishinomiya City, Japan. Leopons are larger than leopards and likes to climb and enjoy water. Apparently a leopard really can’t change its spots, even when mated with a lion. The result is halfway between the two in size and has a lion like head and short mane in males but the coat is spotted like a leopard’s. Unlike lions, Leopons love water and despite being much larger, shares its climbing abilities.Liger_male lion + tiger_Lions and tigers normally don't interbreed in the wild, and when they do, their offspring usually don't survive. The size and appearance of the liger depends on genetic traits passed down to that specific animal. It can have full-body stripes or no stripes at all. There are currently only two ligers in North America: Hercules and Sinbad, who can be seen at Miami's Jungle Island theme park. Napoleon Dynamite may have drawn his own fictional liger, but these big cats are definitely real. Ligers tend to look like lions with stripes. They enjoy swimming, which is a tiger-only trait, and they are sociable like lions. Ligers have to be bred from male lions and female tigers — the reverse are tigons, which are less likely to live past birth, and ligers and tiglons cannot mate.Tigon_male tiger + lion_Mate a female lion and a male tiger and the offspring is known as a Tigon or Tiglon.Roughly the same size as its parents, a Tigon can have a coat that is both spotted and striped since lions carry the gene for spots. Unlike the gentle giant Liger however, Tigons are extremely aggressive. Ligers and Tigons can be further interbred to create a confusing range of animals known as Ti-Ligers, Ti-Tigons, Li-Tigons or Li-Ligers depending on the nature of the cross.Pumapard_puma + leopard_A pumapard is the hybrid of a puma and a leopardess. Dr Helmut Hemmer (1966) reported a hybrid between a male Indian leopard (P pardus fusca) and female puma as being fairly small with a ground colour like that of the puma and having rather faded rosettes. One specimen resembled a little grey puma with large brown rosettes. The cubs apparently grew to be only half the size of the parents. In general, these hybrids have exhibited a tendency to dwarfism.Puma-ocelot_Puma + ocelot_Prior to the ocelot x puma hybrid cubs, the puma had only been hybridized with the jaguar (alleged) and the leopard (confirmed). Meanwhile, the only confirmed hybrids involving ocelots were those between an ocelot and a margay ("marlots"). When keeping wild cat species together (because of shortage of space) it is rare for a larger cat to be housed with a much smaller one - the larger cat might easily consider the smaller one prey! Ocelot-Puma hybrids were reported by G Dubost & J Royere in 1993 in "Zoo Biology 12". The parents were a captive male ocelot and a captive female puma living in a private collection. The puma and the ocelot had shared a single enclosure in a collection in French Guiana since 1986 when they were raised together. The puma was approximately three times the size of the ocelot - she would have needed to co-operate in order to mate with him. They produced four litters of hybrid offspring between 1990 and 1992 and possibly an earlier litter in 1989. The body size and spot pattern of the offspring were intermediate between those of the parents, though they more closely resembled the male parent (ocelot) than the female parent (puma). The offspring showed a variety of patterns, all reminiscent of an ocelot rather than the juvenile pattern of a puma. Servical_serval + caracal_Servicals are the offspring of a male serval and female caracal. They occurred by accident when a Los Angeles zookeeper kept the two animals together. They were given to an animal shelter and no more was heard of them. The only available pictures show the Servicals as kittens. Their adult appearance is unknown, however there is renewed interest in cross-breeding Servals and Caracals for the exotic pet market.Caraval or Cara-serval_caracal + serval_The offspring of a caracal and serval is a caraval. Some call this hybrid a cara-serval. Caravals are now bred for the pet market. Due to restrictions on the keeping of lions etc, there is increased interest in hybrids of these smaller wild cats. Caracals are normally tawny in colour, but melanistic (black) caracals are not uncommon.
