She barely knows Anya. The things that she knows about Anya, she can count off on the fingers of one hand: first Anya is the girl that replaced her in Xander’s heart, secondly Anya was a former demon, thirdly Anya didn’t seem to fond of Xander’s dearest and best friends (also known as Willow and Buffy) and fourthly, well that’s where Cordelia keeps getting stuck.
“Look I get that this might be a bit uncomfortable and all for you but I am sure that Angel thought that blabbing to Buffy about your condition was important and all.”
Cordelia just sits there and stares as Anya mimes quotations marks when she says the word condition. It’s not as if it’s that big of a deal, it’s not as if she needed anyone and everyone to know that she’s now part demon. Cordelia sighs and picks up the concoction that Lorne had set down in front of her shortly after Anya and Cordelia had taken a table in his club.
“And really you seem to be rather well adjusted to the whole situation so it’s not as if you need someone to talk you through it all.”
“I’m fine,” Cordelia quietly says. “Really fine.”
“From the sounds of it, there’s no danger of you going all evil and trying to destroy the world. It just goes to show you how some people can be so bigoted. Then again Buffy has a hard time accepting any one who might have a little bit of demon in them, well unless that someone is a guy.”
Anya sighs before draining her glass. Cordelia sends a desperate look over to Lorne who nods at her before turning back to the person he was talking to.
“I mean really, I renounced my former self, I help out, I fight on the side of good. But little miss perfect seems to think I am still a danger to society. And don’t even get me started on Willow. Saint Willow who actually told Xander that I was considering becoming a demon again based on some stupid comment that I made when we were watching Passions with Spike. I mean really, she’s one to talk.”
Cordelia nods as she looks around desperately for someone to save her. There’s a reason why she left Sunnydale and hasn’t really been in contact with the old gang and Anya’s pinpointing every single reason why.
“Anya, I get it, I do. I mean I lived it but Xander’s a good guy. If you love him, then putting up with Willow and Buffy’s a small price.”
Anya sighs dramatically and Cordelia tenses.
“That’s the thing, I am not sure if I love him. I stayed because he was the only one who cared enough to help me get back on my feet once I wasn’t a demon anymore. You have no idea how alone I was but I am not sure if I want to be with him anymore. I mean he’s really good in bed and all but is a lifetime of good sex worth shackling myself to him for eternity. Or more accurately for a short life?”
Cordelia doesn’t have any answers for Anya and for the first time, she wishes that Skip had made her demon part something interesting. Something with more power than the ability to levitate every so often. That her demon side was something more than just giving her the ability to with stand the visions.
A waitress comes by and sets down more drinks for them before she leaves and Cordelia wishes that she could be like the waitress: demon enough to not fit in so that Anya would have a real reason to be here. If she had a tail or maybe some freaky power, then maybe they could talk about that instead of about Xander Harris.
“I levitate every now and then,” Cordelia blurts out.
Anya rolls her eyes at Cordelia’s admission and waves a hand in her general direction.
“That’s nothing. There are about a thousand lesser demons that have that ability. Seriously, how did you know that Xander wasn’t the one for you?”
Cordelia picks up her glass and drains the sugary-sweet concoction down before waving over the waitress. This is not a conversation she ever wants to have. Thankfully Anya starts talking before Cordelia can answer her.
“I mean I love him but I am just so confused.”
Later on Cordelia will blame the alcohol, but right now she’s more concerned with getting Anya to shut up. Cordelia leans forward, grabs Anya’s shirt and drags the other woman half way across the table and kisses her. At first, Anya is stiff and still and then suddenly her hands are in Cordelia’s hair, pulling the brunette closer. Their lips, teeth and tongues tangle for dominance and Cordelia feels sparks of desire racing up and down her spine.
They pull apart long enough to stumble away from the table into the small bathroom off of the bar. Anya nervously giggles when Cordelia pushes her into one of the stalls but once Cordelia’s locked the door behind her, Anya’s desperately kissing her again.
It doesn’t progress much beyond kissing because as much as Cordelia doesn’t care about Xander Harris, she’s not going to hurt him like he had hurt her so many years ago. She tells herself that this is only about shutting Anya up. But when she leans her head against the tiled wall, panting from the intensity, she knows that if Anya weren’t with Xander she’d be considering changing quite a few things about herself. She decides that she’ll write this all off as being part demon. Still she can’t help the next words that tumble out of her mouth.
“If you ever decide to leave Xander, promise me that you’ll come back here and stay with me for a while.”
Cordelia hates how desperate those words sound. She hates how vulnerable she sounds uttering those words. Still she’s rewarded when Anya smiles at her and pulls her back down for another kiss. Cordelia sighs when Anya’s hand creep under her shirt and she knows that if there’s trouble in paradise. Xander’s bound to do something to make things worse before too long and then she can explore whatever this is between her and Anya. Cordelia smiles before claiming Anya’s lips one last time.
