“Hello?” Lux called over the loud music echoing from the kitchen. Two Princes. She groaned. That song only meant one thing to her parents.
“I’m home,” she yelled loudly, sighing when the song started over. “Come on. At least have the decency to do that where I don’t cook my food.”
She walked slowly into the kitchen, ready to cover her eyes. But her father was alone, cooking dinner. “Um…”
Baze’s head snapped up. “Lux. What are doing here?”
“I live here,” she reminded him, pulling his iPod out of the speaker system. “What’s going on?”
“I wasn’t expecting you back so soon.”
“Yeah, I know. Judging by the music, you were expecting Cate. Where is she?”
“Picking up some groceries. I needed her out of the house for a little while.”
“Then why were you playing…” she began, but trailed off, looking up at him. “Are you cheating on her? What the hell? That’s supposed to be your song,” she yelled at him.
“It is our song. I wanted to surprise her.”
“Yeah, I think this is gonna surprise her. God, I can’t believe actually wanted the three of us to be a family. You’re no different from any other guy. I can’t believe you.”
“We are a family, Lux.”
“No, we’re not. I’ve been in enough to know this is not a good thing. We’re never gonna be a family. Not if you treat her like this.” She shoved him roughly in the shoulder, hardly making him budge.
“Lux,” he said softly.
“What?” she asked, fuming.
“Are you done yelling at me?”
“Maybe,” she mumbled.
“We are a family,” he said again. He glanced quickly out of the kitchen and pulled her to the other end of the room and pulled a ring out of his pocket. “I wanted to surprise her,” he said again.
Lux looked at the ring in her father’s hand. “You’re gonna… you’re gonna propose?” She smiled up at him. “You’re gonna propose?” He nodded slightly. “Oh my God. You’re gonna propose.” She jumped into his arms.
They jumped apart from each other when they heard the front door open and close. “Baze? Lux?” Cate’s voice called.
The two looked at each other for a moment before they started scrambling around the kitchen. Lux jammed the iPod back into the speakers and pressed play so the house once again filled with music.
“Go, go, go,” Baze mumbled, pushing her out of the kitchen.
“Hi,” Lux said as she ran through the living room, past her mother. “Bye.”
“Bye,” Cate mumbled. “Baze, you know this song gives her nightmares.”
Lux stopped at the top at the top of the stairs, listening for her mother’s excited screech before racing back to the kitchen.
