I didn’t think there’d be scars. Not this evident to everyone to see. Invisible. Yet they are there. But I can tell, people know.

It started with a touch. A soft kiss in the hallway, late at night, when we both had stayed at work late, and the lights were out except for two or three, making everything shadowed.

It ended with brutal fights, insults and words thrown, that neither of us meant. I don’t think anyway. I didn’t mean my words, yet you must have meant yours.

But I didn’t think there’d be scars. A one-time thing, I’d promised myself.

But one time turned into two, and two turned into four. Four turned into six, six turned into twelve, and the number kept doubling and doubling.

Three months, this went on.

But I didn’t think there’d be scars.

I remember crying after you left, not throwing myself dramatically at your feet and begging you to stay. I sunk on the floor as soon as the door slammed and I felt the tears on my cheeks, I felt them rolling like rain, down my face and onto my arms that were across my knees.

I didn’t want you back, I told myself. But as much as I did, I knew I couldn’t live correctly without you.

But when you left, I didn’t think there’d be scars.

But a day has turned into two months, and I feel myself closing up into a small shell. I see you every so often, and you look the other way. I like to pretend that it’s not because you’re ashamed of me, of what we did, of what we had together, but because you don’t want me to see the pain in your eyes.

I’ve never been the kind of person to pretend that reality is something different.

But then, I didn’t think there’d be scars from loving you.
