summary: "Any normal bystander sees something quite out of the ordinary, but walks on by and thinks nothing of the foreigner and the black haired boy atop the Namimori school rooftops."
notes: The song "I'm Yours" was stolen shamelessly from Jason Mraz. I'd like to thank all my betas and readers for helping me out on short notice. themegaloo, I hope you like this!
Well, you done done me and you bet I felt it
I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted
It's raining remorselessly and relentlessly, pattering loudly against the cement windows of Namimori junior high. Since the students left hours ago, running hurriedly through the downpour back to the comfort of their homes, the grounds are seemingly barren. Nothing escapes the rain and the cold; it claims every space and surface.
Yet, amid the seemingly empty school grounds, a fight progresses. Any normal bystander would see two figures - a fierce looking black haired boy and an older blond haired foreigner - clashing together on the rooftop of Namimori's gymnasium. (Three if you include another older man standing against the fence holding a cup of coffee in one hand and an umbrella in the other playing the role of a spectator.)
The foreigner carries a whip; now damp and slick in his hands from the rain. His green jacket sticks to him like glue, his socks squelch in his shoes, and he's able to see his breath in front of him. He smirks.
Hibari Kyouya.
The boy - well, maybe he's not a boy depending on how you look at him - carries a pair of tonfas; also slick and slipping a little in his palms. He clutches them even more tightly, a small grin gracing his lips, and he's cold, but nothing in the world says he's showing it.
Dino Cavallone.
Any normal bystander sees something quite out of the ordinary, but walks on by and thinks nothing of the foreigner and the black haired boy atop the Namimori school rooftops.
So, I won't hesitate no more
No more, it cannot wait I'm sure
Dino takes a step backwards, his breath heavy and his vision obscured by the rain. Then he lashes out his whip at the black haired boy.
"Hey, Kyouya," Dino calls out, moving forward and his grip unfaltering. "Thought you should know." A pause and a heave of breath. "But it's raining."
"How observant of you," Hibari calls back, blocking the whip with one of his tonfas before shoving it away towards the older man. "Going to give up because of a little rain?" he asks, voice growing annoyed.
"Never," Dino says firmly, brushing his limp hair out of his face and lashing out his whip again. He can smell Romario's coffee from several feet away, permeating and carrying through the rainy air, and suddenly, a trip to a cafe doesn't sound like such a bad idea right now, but he can't stop. No, Dino knows he can't stop yet.
Hibari skids, his blue eyes focused, squinting intensely at Dino. "Never, huh?" He moves forward again, aiming for Dino's face this time - for maybe the thirtieth time - and again, Dino blocks him with his whip and his smile. He wants to rip that smile off his face.
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
Dino's feet are numb, and he can't differentiate between his wounds and what's just plain wet. His fingers ache from holding his whip for so long. In a sense, it's like being cornered in some alleyway, but you're so ready to pass out from exhaustion and potential hypothermia, the defeat end up coming at a different price.
"Hey, Kyouya, you ready to stop yet?" Dino asks, sounding less hopeful this time.
The only answer he receives is a pair of angry blue eyes and another attempted blow to the face.
Narrowly avoiding the blow, Dino's hand slides on the grip of his whip and he takes a calculated step back again, surveying Hibari. His legs ache and he's probably past the point of feeling just cold.
Hibari launches forward again, bringing his wounded face closer to Dino's own wet and bloodied skin. "No," he said, teeth clenched. "We're done when you're dead."
"I have all night, Kyouya." Dino wants to laugh, but instead, he compromises by grinning at Hibari and fending off another tonfa attack with his sodden whip.
I fell right through the cracks, now I'm trying to get back
Before the cool done run out I'll be giving it my best test
They lose count of the hours - well, at least Dino does since he's pretty sure that Hibari isn't keeping time - and it's definitely sundown now. The sky, already dark from the rain, darkens further and the rain slows, yet continuing to obstruct everything from view.
Dino's body is numb now, yet he can't let go of his whip and despite the exhaustion, he can't stop because Hibari isn't stopping. He wonders how he has the strength to swing his tonfas time after time, hitting him with icy, harsh blows while carrying a big smirk on his face.
"It's sundown, Kyouya," Dino tells him as he lashes out his whip again at the younger boy.
Hibari swats back at him, scowling. "Stop talking."
Well no no, well open up your mind and see like me
Open up your plans and damn you're free
It turns into an ice storm. Freezing rain, freezing cold and ice, ice everywhere.
The flood lights on the roof - which normally turn on after twilight - don't turn on today. They remain off, probably rendered nonfunctional by the ice storm, and everything plunges into darkness.
Dino squints into the darkness, barely able to make out the blurred whiteness of Hibari's shirt and his silvery tonfas. He still holds his whip in his blue fingers, and he's ready to let Hibari attack him again.
Then Hibari stops, lowering his tonfas and his gaze on Dino. He studies him for a moment then turns away, shuffling towards the door. Reaching for the ice covered door knob with frozen fingers, he pries it open and slips silently inside.
Dino lulls forward slightly, watching Hibari drop his tonfas and make his way to the exit. He blinks, letting the hand holding his whip drop to his side.
"Wait."
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and I laughed
The next few hours are a blur for Dino. After Hibari disappears through the door to the rooftop, he stumbles a little - "Boss!" - and something catches him, but it's definitely too late. Hibari is gone, probably wounded and limping down the stairs back to wherever he goes after school lets out each day.
"You should get warm, Boss," Romario tells Dino, helping him back down the stairs as another group of his subordinates pelt him with blankets and towels.
Dino's lips are too numb to protest, so he wraps himself up with one of the blankets and lets himself be herded downstairs. It feels a little childish to him, but he allows for it since they're family and that is their job after all.
After Romario helps him into the backseat of one of the cars, he collapses, closing his eyes and longing for sleep, warmth, and a really big cup of coffee.
This is our fate
The next day, Dino receives a text message during brunch. Setting down his chopsticks, he flips open his phone and stares at a number he's never seen before and it's message.
The roof.
Dino blinks then wrinkles his eyebrows at the little screen, pondering. Then he stands, shutting his phone and shoving it into his pocket.
"Boss?" Romario raises an brow, putting down his chopsticks too. "Is something wrong?"
"Call the car," Dino says.
I'm Yours
The door to the rooftop of Namimori's gymnasium bursts open, and Dino, whip in hand, looks around the still wet area, breathless from running up four flights of stairs.
"Hey, Kyouya!"
