Chris Martin 26 6 74 2 2.84 122 9 0 2 0
6.3 to AN Cook, gone! this is amazing stuff, Cook gets an inside edge into his stumps as he tries to drive and the third one is gone inside seven overs. Martin mixing up his line from round and over the wicket, Cook responded with an airy drive. 4/3 95.5 to MS Panesar, gone! Martin gets his reward, fires in a full straight ball which Panesar plays all around and loses his middle stump. Was set up by a series of outswingers, well bowled. 253/9
Tim Southee 23.1 8 55 5 2.37 113 5 1 1 0
3.5 to MP Vaughan, gone! Southee has his first Test wicket and Vaughan has gone early...trapped on the crease as he expects the ball to swing out again, it doesn't and is struck plumb in front of middle. Well bowled, and a great start for New Zealand. 4/1 5.5 to AJ Strauss, gone! well, well what a start for Southee...a wide ball to Strauss which tempts an expansive and loose drive, Jamie How pulls off a fine catch in the gully and all of a sudden England are in some trouble. 4/2 82.2 to KP Pietersen, outside off, driven off a thick edge stomach-high to gully and a straightforward catch. The crowd stand as he heads off ...without him England would be a complete shambles as opposed to only being a moderate one. 208/7 92.1 to SCJ Broad, gone! and he strikes with the first ball off the day, perfectly pitched outside off stump, Broad pushes forward and gets an outside edge through to Brendon McCullum. 240/8 96.1 to RJ Sidebottom, gone! Yes he can, dug in short and Sidebottom goes for the pull but only succeeds in lobbing a simple catch to mid-on. Great effort from Southee, five wickets on debut: 23.1-8-55-5 are his figures. 253/10
Grant Elliott 10 2 27 1 2.70 47 3 0 0 0
23.1 to IR Bell, gone! Would you believe it, Ian Bell has contrived to flat-bat a long-hop straight back to Elliott as he tried to work it into the leg side. That's Elliott's first Test wicket as England sink further. 36/4
Daniel Vettori 19 6 51 0 2.68 89 6 1 0 0
Jeetan Patel 18 3 37 2 2.05 85 3 0 0 1
48.6 to PD Collingwood, wide, Collingwood leans back and cuts straight to backward point. A really appalling shot, no two ways about it, given both the ball, which wasn't short enough, and the situation. He hurries off as well he might. 125/5 60.5 to TR Ambrose, slanted across him, Ambrose pushes hard, gets an edge and Taylor takes a sharp waist-high catch at second slip. 147/6

0.3 to MD Bell, gone! this time Bell's plumb as he pads up to a ball which shapes back and hits him bang in front of all three...Bell really out of his depth, a horrible misjudgement, and the early boost England needed. 1/1 22.3 to SP Fleming, gone! the breakthrough for England and Sidebottom does it again, outside off stump and Fleming plays a loose push which flies quickly to second slip where Collingwood holds on.. 103/2 28.3 to JM How, gone! well, the round the wicket ploy has worked (so what do I know) as Sidebottom gets How to drive at a full delivery outside off stump. An edge flies nicely to Strauss at first slip and suddenly England are back in it. 116/3 30.2 to MS Sinclair, gone! what is going on here, a short ball which Sinclair miscues straight to mid-on where Broad snaffles a low catch...that didn't come out anywhere near the middle, another failure for Sinclair. 119/5 32.6 to BB McCullum, gone! what a huge wicket for England, round the wicket, jags back at McCullum who plays an expansive cut and drags into his stumps...Sidebottom has another five-wicket haul, one in each Test this series, and his 50th Test wicket. 137/6 36.4 to GD Elliott, probing line, Elliott half fences, gets the thinnest of edges and Ambrose does the rest ... Elliott is off without looking at the umpire and Sidebottom has 6 for 33. 138/7 48.4 to DL Vettori, gone! Sidebottom finishes the innings with his seventh wicket as Vettori gets a thick outside edge to Cook at fourth slip/fine gully...a career-best 7 for 47 for the left-armer and what a spell it has been. 168/10
James Anderson 7 1 54 0 7.71 24 10 1 0 0
Stuart Broad 17 3 54 3 3.17 79 9 0 1 0
29.6 to LRPL Taylor, gone! what a beauty from Broad, on off stump and takes Taylor's outside edge as he's caught on the crease...simple catch for Ambrose and England are right back in this match. 119/4 41.5 to TG Southee, another short one, Southee can do no more than fend it to Pietersen in the gully, it looped ever so slowly to him for the easiest of catches. 152/8 47.5 to JS Patel, gone! a simple dismissal as Patel is early on his drive and pops a catch to Panesar at mid-off...it really is a mad day, Monty takes a catch in the outfield (ok, that's harsh). 164/9

0.5 to MP Vaughan, gone! what's going on, an horrendous pull from Vaughan takes the top edge through to McCullum and the wickets continue to tumble. That wasn't short enough for the shot, but Vaughan appeared intent on attacking. 5/1
Tim Southee 24 5 84 0 3.50 111 16 0 0 0

25.1 to AN Cook, he tries to cut one that is far too straight, a little extra bounce, and a relieved McCullum holds a thin top edge as Patel hurtles towards midwicket in celebration. The umpire just nods and Cook slowly heads off, not dissent but frustration. 77/2 123.5 to AJ Strauss, and Strauss falls hitting out for the team cause, coming down the pitch trying to go inside out over extra cover but he doesn't middle it and Matthew Bell takes a good catch running round from mid-off...a selfless dismissal, but England are batting on. 424/6
Daniel Vettori 45 6 158 4 3.51 186 15 2 0 4
48.3 to KP Pietersen, what a brilliant catch! Ross Taylor, standing in for Fleming at slip, pulls off a blinder at slip as Pietersen tries to turn the ball to leg and gets the back of back...Taylor won't have seen that until late, it's an outstanding catch. 140/3 98.3 to IR Bell, picks out mid-off as he tries to go down the ground but doesn't get the elevation, some reward for Vettori on a tough day and the end of a fine century from Bell. 327/4 106.1 to PD Collingwood, what a tame dismissal, trying to work into the leg side and chips a simple catch back to Vettori...nicely held back by Vettori who has his third of the day. 361/5 124.2 to TR Ambrose, and another goes, trying to turn it to leg and he gets a leading edge back to Vettori who takes a simple catch and this isn't quite going to plan for England. 425/7

118.5 to CS Martin, full and speared in through a non-existent defence, the off stump goes cartwheeling and that's the end of a thoroughly entertaining post-lunch half hour and of the match. 431/10
James Anderson 17 2 99 1 5.82 70 18 2 0 0
109.6 to DL Vettori, oh no ... he again moves along way to the off to try to work a short ball into the leg side, gets a glove and Ambrose holds a simple catch. 347/9
Stuart Broad 32 10 78 2 2.43 157 7 2 3 1
61.6 to MS Sinclair, another one goes, Sinclair's trot continues and Broad gets just reward as he bangs a short one towards his ribs and Sinclair gets into a tangle...the ball takes a glove and loops behind for Ambrose to take a simple catch, a good effort from Broad on a slow pitch. 160/4 69.2 to GD Elliott, oh dear ... a horrible and Andrex-soft dismissal ... short, he swats as if being pestered by a bluebottle, top edges, the ball loops gently to short leg who has to run back five yards or so and Elliott heads off, completing a wretched debut. 172/5
Monty Panesar 46 17 126 6 2.73 226 14 5 0 0
20.3 to JM How, gone! Panesar gets the breakthrough, on the front foot and taken on the pad...Daryl Harper thinks about it and raises the finger, that was going straight on to towards middle stump. 48/1 50.3 to MD Bell, gone! Panesar makes the breakthrough as Bell top edges a pull shot out to deep backward square and offers a simple catch...dragged in very short and was asking to be hit, but he didn't get over the ball. 147/2 54.3 to SP Fleming, gone...Monty strikes again and ends Fleming's Test career as he goes for a cut and edges through to Tim Ambrose, was a slightly lazy shot.. 156/3 90.6 to LRPL Taylor, gone! there's the breakthrough, a lovely flighted delivery on off stump, turns a fraction and takes the edge low to Collingwood's right at slip...a good, sharp catch to end a sparky innings from Taylor. 276/6 92.3 to BB McCullum, gone...Panesar gets his fifth, a quicker ball which McCullum goes back to and misses his whip to leg, the ball crashes into middle stump and Monty sets off in celebration again. 281/7 106.4 to JS Patel, outside leg, a well-timed sweep but a super low catch by a delighted Broad diving to his left at backward square leg. Collingwood, who is in charge as Vaughan has popped off, had just brought Broad in off the boundary. 329/8
