I am a senior researcher at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI). My work focuses on human-computer interaction and networked systems applied to societal problems. Much of my previous work is in the area of information and communication technologies for development (ICTD). More recently I've been focusing on designing pluralistic networked systems (e.g. Timbre and Stencil) and sustainability. My recent papers include: **A Pluralist Approach to Democratizing Online Discourse**Jay Chen, Barath Raghavan, Paul Schmitt, Tai LiuarXiv (arxiv.org), August 2021. **Karamad: A Voice-based Crowd-sourcing Platform for Under-served Populations**Shan Randhawa, Tallal Ahmad, Jay Chen, Agha Ali RazaACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI)Yokohama, Japan, May 2021. A full list of my publications is available here.OpportunitiesI am always interested in working with talented PhD students, research assistants, and interns (summer or off-cycle). If you have a combination of creativity, self-motivation, and strong technical skills send your CV and a cover letter to jchen AT icsi.berkeley.edu.
