Wingman is a graphical WWW browser (with support for the HTTP, FTP, and gopher protocols) for the Palm Pilot(tm). It supports 2-bit-per-pixel graphics, a large (and growing) subset of HTML 3, and a user-controllable hotlist and offline browsing cache. Security and HTML forms will be supported soon, although some "forms" functionality is available through the use of aggregators.
Wingman achieves good performance through the aggressive use of a_proxy architecture_: parsing, layout and image conversion are done at a proxy server running on a workstation cluster, and a simple representation of the output is "spoon fed" to the browser client.
The same proxy server runs the TranSend service at UC Berkeley.
Screenshots of Top Gun Wingman are available on aseparate page.
Requirements for Wingman
- US Robotics Palm Pilot Professional with a minimum of 50KB memory free
- A modem or other networking device attached to the Pilot
(a HotSync cradle and the standard Pilot Desktop software will not work) - Network and Modem configuration correctly set up on the Pilot
(i.e. you can already establish a PPP connection)
