The 1973 NHL Amateur Draft was the 11th National Hockey League draft. It was the first to be held on a separate day from other league activities on May 15, 1973, at the Mount Royal Hotel in Montreal, Quebec, so it would not overshadow the rest of the league meetings. Previously, the league had held the amateur draft in mid-June. It also marks the second time the meeting took place at the Mount Royal Hotel rather than the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Eligible for the draft were all amateur players born before January 1, 1954. The NHL paid a lump sum to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association to support major junior hockey as a group. Teams could offer a player a contract at any time after the draft without risking re-entry in a future NHL draft. The last active players in the NHL from this draft class were Lanny McDonald and Bob Gainey, who both retired after the 1988–89 season. Ce fut le onzième repêchage amateur de la ligue et seulement la seconde fois que le lieu choisit ne fut pas l'hôtel Reine Élizabeth. De plus ce fut la première fois que la journée était entièrement consacré à l'évènement. La vedette du repêchage était le joueur des 67's d'Ottawa, Denis Potvin qui était vu comme le futur Bobby Orr. Les Canadiens de Montréal firent tout pour pouvoir choisir en premier. Le premier choix appartenait aux Islanders de New York et directeur général de la franchise n'accepta aucun compromis et Potvin devint une des bases de la franchise dans les années suivantes. Già nel 1972, con l'avvento della lega concorrente della World Hockey Association e con il pericolo di veder sottratti i migliori talenti delle leghe giovanili, molte squadre iniziarono a prestare sempre più attenzione alle attività del draft tralasciando le altre questioni amministrative; in risposta a ciò la NHL separò il Draft dagli altri eventi in programma, anticipando inoltre di quattro giorni il Draft della WHA. I New York Islanders selezionarono il difensore Denis Potvin dagli Ottawa 67's, gli Atlanta Flames invece come seconda scelta puntarono sul centro , proveniente dai Medicine Hat Tigers, mentre i Vancouver Canucks scelsero in terza posizione l'ala destra dei London Knights. Fra i 168 giocatori selezionati 103 erano attaccanti, 53 erano difensori mentre 12 erano portieri. Dei giocatori scelti 70 giocarono in NHL, 8 vinsero la Stanley Cup mentre 3 di loro entrarono a far parte della Hockey Hall of Fame.
