General elections were held in Tonga on 23 and 24 April 2008 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly. The nobles were elected on 23 April, and the nine people's representatives on 24 April. A total of 32,000 people turned out to vote, giving a turnout of 48%. 71 candidates had filed for the people's representatives' seats, among them eight women. All nine incumbents stood for reelection, with six retaining their seats. Most of the pro-democracy MPs were returned, despite several facing charges of sedition over the 2006 Nuku'alofa riots. Reportedly, all nine elected MPs were pro-democracy activists. These elections were the last ones before democratic reforms expected to be implemented in 2010, which would change the seat balance as follows: 17 MPs would be popularly elected, nine MPs would be elected by the nobles and four MPs appointed by the king. Viliami Uasike Latu requested a recount in Vava'u, the constituency he contested, as he missed out on the second seat there by only 51 votes. The recount was conducted from 5 to 9 May at the Office of the Governor of Vava’u, and confirmed the original result. (en)
Des élections législatives se sont tenues aux Tonga les 23 et 24 avril 2008. Il s'agissait d'élire 18 des 30 membres de l’Assemblée législative (Fale Alea). Les neuf représentants de la noblesse furent élus par et parmi les 29 nobles héréditaires du royaume, le 23 avril, et les neuf représentants du peuple furent élus le lendemain par les citoyens tongiens. (Les douze autres députés ne sont pas élus, et siègent ex officio.) Pour l'élection du 24 avril, soixante-et-onze candidats, dont huit femmes et les neuf députés sortants, se disputèrent les neuf sièges à pourvoir. 67 000 citoyens étaient inscrits sur les listes électorales. Il existe bien des partis politiques aux Tonga, mais ceux-ci ne sont pas autorisés à prendre part aux élections. Tout candidat s'inscrit donc officiellement à titre individuel. Wybory parlamentarne na Tonga odbyły się 23 i 24 kwietnia 2008. 23 kwietnia tongijska szlachta wybierała 9 reprezentantów w 32-osobowym Zgromadzeniu Ustawodawczym, zaś 24 kwietnia swoich 9 reprezentantów wybierał lud. Oprócz przedstawicieli ludu i szlachty w Zgromadzeniu Ustawodawczym zasiadają z urzędu członkowie mianowanej przez króla Tajnej Rady (12 ministrów) oraz dwóch gubernatorów. (pl)
