The 2024 United States Senate election in California will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of California. Incumbent five-term Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein was re-elected in the 2018 election with 54.2% of the vote. She will be 91 years old in 2024. Media sources have speculated that Feinstein may choose to retire in January 2025, owing to her age, reports that her cognitive state is declining, and her decision not to take the position of Senate president pro tempore in January 2023, even though that role is typically held by the oldest member of the majority caucus and is third in line for the presidency. She may also resign before the end of her term, which would allow California governor Gavin Newsom to appoint a successor, as he did when Senator Kamala Harris resigned in 2021 to take office as Vice President and he chose Alex Padilla to replace her. If Feinstein does not seek re-election and serves out the rest of her term, this would be only the second open Senate race in California in the past thirty years, and the first open race for the Class I seat since 1982.
