A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam (1988) is a book by Neil Sheehan, a former New York Times reporter, about U.S. Army lieutenant colonel John Paul Vann (killed in action) and the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. Sheehan was awarded the 1988 National Book Award for Nonfiction and the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for the book. It was adapted as a film of the same name released by HBO in 1998, starring Bill Paxton and Amy Madigan.

Narra la vicenda reale di John Paul Vann, un consigliere militare americano che ebbe un ruolo di rilievo durante buona parte del conflitto del Vietnam, morendo poco prima del termine della guerra in un incidente di volo. Nel libro viene inoltre affrontato estesamente il tema della guerra stessa, approfondendo in modo specifico la visione strategica seguita dai vertici militari nelle varie fasi del conflitto. Il libro ha vinto nel 1988 il National Book Award nella sezione saggistica (non fiction), ed il Premio Pulitzer nel 1989 sempre per la categoria saggistica (non fiction).
