AZF (afkorting van AZote Fertisants) is een chemische fabriek van de onderneming , onderdeel van die alle chemische activiteiten van de groep TotalFinaElf omvat. De fabriek bevindt zich 5 km van het centrum van Toulouse. Op 21 september 2001 werd de fabriek totaal verwoest door een explosie waarbij meer dan 30 doden vielen.

The blast was equivalent to 20-40 tons of TNT, producing an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4, and was heard 80 km away (50 miles). The incident resulted in 29 deaths and left 2,500 wounded. Damages paid by insurance companies exceeded 1.5 billion euros. Although authorities initially treated the incident as an accident, the then Environment Minister speculated that the explosion may have been "a terrorist attack" in the wake of the September 11 attacks. The body of a worker known to harbor Islamic fundamentalist sympathies was found in the blast and investigated, although official investigation found the blast to be accidental. In spring of 2004, a terrorist group adopted the same name and threatened the French government with bombings. (en) L'usine AZF de Toulouse était une usine d'agrochimie (AZote Fertilisants) certifiée ISO 14001 et 9002, et classée Seveso, située à Toulouse, dans la Haute-Garonne. Un de ses hangars, contenant des nitrates déclassés, a explosé le 21 septembre 2001 à 10h17. Elle appartenait à la société Grande Paroisse, filiale d'Atofina. Depuis la fusion en avril 2000 de Total et d'Elf-Aquitaine, Atofina regroupait toutes les activités chimiques du groupe: Arkema, GPN, SOFERTI, etc. L'activité principale de l'usine était la synthèse d'ammoniac, d'urée et de nitrates à partir de gaz naturel, produits destinés à l'agriculture (engrais azotés) et à l'industrie (explosifs de mines notamment). En 2009, commence le projet de construction d'un important centre de recherche sur le cancer, le Cancéropôle de Toulouse (ou Oncopole), sur les ruines dépolluées du site AZF. Projet de construction qui s'est terminé en 2013 et désormais visible et rouvert.
