Abigail (Hungarian: Abigél) is a young adult novel by the Hungarian author Magda Szabó. It was first published in 1970 and is her most widely read novel. Abigail is an adventure story about a teenage girl who attends a Calvinist girls' school in eastern Hungary during World War II. In the Hungarian Big Read in 2005, it was voted the sixth most popular novel in Hungary. It was the third most popular Hungarian novel on the list. The novel has been translated into Czech, French, German, Italian, Latvian, Polish, and Romanian. An English translation by Len Rix was published in January 2020.

Depuis, le livre a été republié plusieurs fois, adapté pour la télévision, le cinéma, la comédie musicale et le théâtre. Il est très populaire en Hongrie au XXIe siècle aussi. Dans un sondage organisé sur le modèle de The Big Read de la BBC, Le grand livre, en 2005, il a occupé la troisième place sur 100. Le roman n’a suscité un intérêt international que bien longtemps après sa parution, grâce à sa traduction en français, publiée en 2017 et republiée en 2019, mais surtout grâce à sa traduction en anglais, parue en 2020. Le roman semble au début être un livre romantique d’aventures mais sa profondeur se révèle au cours de son action ayant lieu pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale, qui intervient aussi dans la vie en apparence sans soucis des adolescentes d’un lycée pensionnat.
