- Els Premis Alex reconeixen deu llibres escrits per a públic adult que també poden tenen un atractiu especial per a joves entre dotze i divuit anys. Es van donar per primera vegada l'any 1998 i es van convertir en un premi oficial de la American Library Association (ALA) el 2002. Essencialment, aquests premis són una llista de l'ALA, paral·lela a la selecció dels millors llibres juvenils, que s'atorguen amb periodicitat anual. Els títols guanyadors són seleccionats entre els que han sigut publicats l'any anterior. Des de l'any 2002, els premis Alex estan administrats per la Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), una divisió de l'ALA. - The Alex Awards annually recognize "ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults ages 12 through 18". Essentially, the award is a listing by the American Library Association parallel to its annual Best Books for Young Adults, a longer list of recommended books that have been promoted in the YA category. Since 2002, the Alex Awards have been administered by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). YALSA also names several other "Top Tens" annually. The awards, named after Baltimore librarian Margaret Alexander Edwards, who was known as "Alex," are sponsored by the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust and Booklist magazine. The list of books published during the previous year serves to provide the choice of titles selected for the awards, which were initially bestowed in 1998. (en)

Il premio è stato istituito in onore della biliotecaria di Baltimora , conosciuta come Alex, ed è patrocinato dalla Alexander Margaret Edwards Trust e dalla rivista Booklist. I libri da premiare vengono scelti tra tutti i titoli pubblicati nel corso dell'anno precedente. A partire dal 2002 il concorso è gestito dalla Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), una divisione della American Library Association (ALA).
