It is a rare plant known only from one location, specifically by a stream in in the . In its natural habitat, A. exilis is reportedly accompanied by Pandanus and Calamus plants. The rachis and stipe range in colour from brown to dark brown or black-brown and are covered in blunt spines and scales. The scales are dull brown in colour and bear terminal setae, mostly one each. Sori are round and occur on either side of the pinnule midvein. Indusia are absent. (en) Cyathea exilis är en ormbunkeart som beskrevs av Holtt.
