Today, the project has delivered its equipment to the government, creating the SIPAM (Amazonian Protection System) and enhancing the Brazilian Airspace Control System. Het systeem bewaakt de grenzen met de drie Guyana's (Suriname, Guyana en Frans-Guyana), Bolivia, Colombia, Peru en Venezuela. Het doel is om de handel in illegale verdovende middelen in het gebied te beteugelen en illegale houtkap of het verbranden van het bos aan banden te leggen. De Guyanese universitair docent Mark Kirton bepleitte in 2017 om SIVAM uit te breiden naar de drie Guyana's. Het systeem is een netwerk van sensoren op het land, radars en satellieten. SIVAM werd in juli 1994 geïnstalleerd door Brazilië, dat voor circa 60 procent wordt bedekt door het Amazonegebied. Este projeto visa atender a um antigo anseio das forças armadas, cujo desejo era a presença das forças armadas brasileiras na Amazônia, com a finalidade de fazer frente às manifestações de líderes internacionais contra os direitos do povo brasileiro sobre esta região. Os sucessivos projetos de internacionalização da Amazônia expurgaram esta percepção de ameaça sobre a soberania territorial da Amazônia Brasileira. Para fazer frente a este tipo de ameaça, as Forças Armadas, juntamente com pesquisadores civis da região Amazônica, propuseram a construção de uma ampla infraestrutura de apoio à vigilância aérea e comunicação na região amazônica. Como parte do projeto SIVAM, foi construída a infraestrutura necessária para suportar a fixação de enormes antenas de radar, sistemas de comunicação, bem como de modernas aparelhagens eletrônicas. Também faz parte desta infraestrutura a integração com o satélite brasileiro de sensoriamento remoto, que permite fiscalizar o desmatamento na Amazônia. (pt) |
