An Essay on the History of Civil Society is a book by Scottish Enlightenment philosopher Adam Ferguson, first published in 1767. The Essay established Ferguson's reputation in Britain and throughout Europe. In the second section of the third part of the Essay discussing the history of political establishments, Ferguson states "Every step and every movement of the multitude, even in what are termed enlightened ages, are made with equal blindness to the future; and nations stumble upon establishments, which are indeed the result of human action, but not the execution of any human design."

Il suo lavoro si basa sull'osservazione dell'uomo nell'ambito dei rapporti sociali; proprio a questo si riconduce la sua fama di anticipatore delle moderne scienze sociali. Il saggio fu accolto con particolare entusiasmo dai lettori, ebbe diverse edizioni e fu tradotto in varie lingue. Il saggio, acclamato dalla critica dopo la pubblicazione, godette di un vasto pubblico per circa trenta anni. Voltaire elogiò Ferguson per "avere civilizzato i russi" per come insegnò all'Università di Mosca.L'opera tuttavia non fu apprezzata da David Hume, amico dell'autore, che la giudicò superficiale e gli consigliò di non pubblicarla.
