The Agnis people (or Anyi) are an Akan people living in West Africa. There are approximately 1,200,000 of them, mainly in the Ivory Coast. They also live in Ghana. They were the first people, in this region, to have come into contact with the European colonizers during the 18th century.

Traditionell waren die Anyi in kleinen Staaten mit einer sozialen Hierarchie aus vier Schichten organisiert: der Königsfamilie, den Dorfvorstehern, Freien sowie Sklaven und ihre Nachkommen. Heute wird der Dorfhäuptling von prominenten Dorfbewohnern und einer speziellen Familie gewählt, die den sogenannten „Erbzeremoniestuhl“ besitzt. Die traditionellen Systeme der Erbfolge basieren auf matrilinearer Abstammung, allerdings wohnt das verheiratete Ehepaar in der Nähe von der Familie des Ehemanns. Dieses System sorgt für erhebliche Spannungen, die noch zusätzlich durch die Anpflanzung von Marktfrüchten verstärkt werden, da, obwohl ein junger Mann normalerweise mit seinem Vater zusammenarbeitet, dieser im Allgemeinen nicht die Plantage erbt, auf der er arbeitet. Obwohl die Anyi viel von der materiellen Kultur Europas übernommen haben, bleiben die traditionellen Elemente ihrer Sozialstruktur eine wirksame Basis für die alltägliche politische Organisation.
