في 14 فبراير 2005، اغتيل رئيس الوزراء اللبناني الأسبق رفيق الحريري مع 21 شخصًا، عندما انفجر ما يعادل 1000 كيلوغرام من مادة التي إن تي أثناء مرور موكبه بالقرب من فندق سان جورج في بيروت. وكان من بين القتلى العديد من حراس الحريري وواحد من اصدقائه، بالإضافة إلى وزير الاقتصاد اللبناني الاسبق باسل فليحان. دفن الحريري مع حراسه في موقع قريب من جامع محمد الأمين. في 6 فبراير 2006، اتفقت الحكومة اللبنانية والأمم المتحدة على تشكيل المحكمة الدولية الخاصة بلبنان، وعدت هذه المرة الأولى التي تحاكم فيها محكمة دولية أشخاصًا لجريمة ارتكبت ضد شخص معين. استنادا لسي بي سي نيوز، وصحيفة وول ستريت وصحيفة هاآرتس الإسرائيلية، بالإضافة إلى المحكمة الدولية الخاصة بلبنان جنبا إلى تحقيق مستقل قام به النقيب وسام الحسن، فإنه تم العثور على أدلة دامغة تثبت تورط عناصر من حزب الله في عملية الاغتيال. وعقب اغتيال الحريري حصلت عدة انفجارات واغتيالات ضد شخصيات مناهضة للوجود السوري في لبنان وكان من بينها: سمير قصير، جورج حاوي، جبران غسان تويني، بيار أمين الجميل، وليد عيدو. كما تم محاولة اغتيال كل من: إلياس المر، مي شدياق، (الذي كان يحقق في قضية اغتيال الحريري). On 14 February 2005, former Prime Minister of Lebanon Rafic Hariri was killed along with 21 others in an explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. Explosives equivalent to around 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of TNT were detonated as his motorcade drove near the St. George Hotel. Among the dead were several of Hariri's bodyguards and former Minister of the Economy, Bassel Fleihan. Hariri had been part of the anti-Syrian opposition in Lebanon. His assassination triggered the Cedar Revolution, a popular movement which forced Syria to withdraw all its troops in Lebanon by April 2005. The killing also led the United Nations to set up the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to investigate the killing. The Special Tribunal, along with an independent investigation carried out by Lebanese Brigadier General Wissam Al-Hassan, found compelling evidence for the responsibility of the Lebanese group Hezbollah in the assassination. One of the investigators, Wissam Eid, was assassinated in 2008. In August 2020, judges at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon found Salim Ayyash, a mid-level operative in Hezbollah, guilty in absentia of five charges including the intentional murder of Hariri with premeditation by using explosive materials. Three other defendants were acquitted. The panel of judges concluded there was "no evidence that the Hezbollah leadership had any involvement in Hariri's murder and there is no direct evidence of Syrian involvement." Hezbollah denied any involvement and its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, refused to allow the arrest of Ayyash. (en)
Bei dem Attentat auf Rafiq al-Hariri handelt es sich um einen Sprengstoffanschlag auf den libanesischen Ex-Ministerpräsidenten und Unternehmer Rafiq al-Hariri am 14. Februar 2005 in Beirut. Dabei kamen neben Hariri noch 22 weitere Menschen ums Leben. Es gab mehr als 100 Verletzte. Obwohl Syrien jede Beteiligung am Anschlag bestreitet, deuten die Berichte der von den Vereinten Nationen eingesetzten Untersuchungskommission darauf hin, dass Mitglieder syrischer und libanesischer Geheimdienste, möglicherweise sogar höchste Regierungskreise, in den Anschlag verwickelt waren oder zumindest im Vorfeld davon wussten. Die Untersuchung dauert aber noch an. Der Anschlag sorgte in den anschließenden Jahren für Konflikte in der libanesischen Regierung. 2011 wurden vier Haftbefehle gegen Mitglieder der Hisbollah ausgestellt. (de)

Parmi les morts se trouvaient plusieurs gardes du corps de Rafiq Hariri et l'ancien ministre de l'Économie Bassel Fleihan. Rafiq Hariri avait fait partie de l'opposition anti-syrienne au Liban. Son assassinat a déclenché la révolution du Cèdre, un mouvement populaire qui a forcé la Syrie à retirer toutes ses troupes du Liban en avril 2005.
