The Battle of Porto Praya was a naval battle that took place during the American Revolutionary War on 16 April 1781 between a British squadron under Commodore George Johnstone and a French squadron under the Bailli de Suffren. Both squadrons were en route to the Cape of Good Hope, the British to take it from the Dutch, the French aiming to help defend it and French possessions in the Indian Ocean. The British convoy and its escorting squadron had anchored at Porto Praya (now Praia) in the Portuguese Cape Verde Islands to take on water, when the French squadron arrived and attacked them at anchor. Due to the unexpected nature of the encounter, neither fleet was prepared to do battle, and in the inconclusive battle the French fleet sustained more damage than the British, though no ships were lost. Johnstone tried to pursue the French, but was forced to call it off in order to repair the damage his ships had taken. The French gained a strategic victory, because Suffren beat Johnstone to the Cape and reinforced the Dutch garrison before continuing on his journey to the Île de France (now Mauritius). (en)
La bataille de Porto Praya est une bataille navale qui a eu lieu le 18 avril 1781 pendant la guerre d'indépendance américaine, entre la flotte britannique commandée par le chef d'escadre George Johnstone et la flotte française commandée par le bailli de Suffren. Les deux escadres étaient en route pour le cap de Bonne-Espérance, les Anglais pour prendre celui-ci aux Hollandais, et les Français dans le but de les aider à le défendre, ainsi que les possessions françaises dans l'océan Indien. La battaglia di Porto Praya fu una battaglia navale che ebbe luogo durante la Rivoluzione americana il 16 aprile 1781 tra la flotta britannica comandata dal commodoro e quella francese guidata da Pierre André de Suffren de Saint Tropez. Entrambe le flotte erano in rotta per il Capo di Buona Speranza; i britannici per togliere il controllo del Capo agli olandesi, i francesi per difendere i loro possedimenti nell'Oceano Indiano. Il convoglio britannico e le navi da guerra che lo scortavano erano ancorate nel porto di Capo Verde, quando sopraggiunse lo squadrone francese che attaccò le navi di Sua Maestà. W kwietniu 1781 r. eskadra angielska w sile 12 jednostek eskortująca konwój z wojskiem i zaopatrzeniem dowodzona przez komandora George Johnstone popłynęła do portu w Porto Praya na Wyspach Zielonego Przylądka. Dnia 16 kwietnia w rejonie wyspy pojawiła się francuska eskadra (10 okrętów) pod wodzą Pierre André de Suffrena, która zaatakowała Anglików. Atak okazał się mało skuteczny a Anglicy stracili jedynie kilka transportowców oraz 160 ludzi. Straty francuskie wyniosły ok. 300 zabitych i rannych. (pl)
