The Bernhardt Line (or Reinhard Line) was a German defensive line in Italy during the Italian Campaign of World War II. Having reached the Bernhardt Line at the start of December 1943, it took until mid-January 1944 for the U.S. Fifth Army to fight their way to the next line of defences, the Gustav Line. The line was defended by XIV Panzer Corps (XIV Panzerkorps), part of the German Tenth Army (10. Armee). Unlike most of the other defensive lines it did not run all the way across Italy but was merely a bulge in front of the main Gustav Line, running over the massif of Monte Cassino, enclosing the peaks of Monte Cassino (Monastery Hill), Monte la Difensa, Monte la Remetanea and Monte Maggiore, in the territory of Rocca d'Evandro, and Monte Sambucaro (or Sammucro), which stands at the border of the three regions (Lazio, Molise and Campania). However, the defences of the Gustav Line on the Adriatic are sometimes referred to as the Bernhardt Line and the battles for this part of the line are included in this entry. The Bernhardt line was not as strong as the Gustav Line and was intended only to delay the Allies' arrival at the Gustav Line. La ligne Bernhardt (ou ligne Reinhard) est une position défensive de la Wehrmacht en Italie établie pendant la campagne italienne de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ayant atteint la ligne Bernhardt début décembre 1943, il a fallu attendre la mi-janvier 1944 pour que la 5e armée américaine se fraie un chemin vers la ligne de défense suivante, la ligne Gustave. La ligne était défendue par le XIVe Panzerkorps, qui faisait partie de la 10e armée allemande. Contrairement à la plupart des autres lignes défensives, elle ne traversait pas l'Italie d'une part et d'autre mais constituait qu'un renflement devant la ligne principale Gustave, traversant le massif du mont Cassin, entourant les sommets du monastère du mont Cassin, Monte la Difensa, Monte la Remetanea et Monte Maggiore, sur le territoire de Rocca d'Evandro, et Monte Sambucaro (ou Sammucro), qui se dresse à la frontière des trois régions (Latium, Molise et Campanie). La linea Bernhardt, detta anche linea Reinhard, fu una linea fortificata difensiva costruita dall'esercito tedesco in Italia durante la campagna d'Italia della seconda guerra mondiale. Difesa dal XIV Panzerkorps, la linea Bernhardt subì i primi attacchi da parte della 5ª armata statunitense a partire dal 5 novembre 1943, mentre la lotta si protrasse fino a dicembre inoltrato, quando venne espugnata. A differenza delle altre linee difensive costruite dai tedeschi in Italia, essa non si estendeva da est a ovest attraversando la penisola, ma consisteva in una serie di salienti della linea Gustav nella regione di Montecassino, comprendente la città di . Passava per la vetta del Monte Camino (Monastery Hill), e Monte Maggiore, nel territorio di Rocca d'Evandro, e , che sta al confine fra le tre regioni del Lazio, Molise e Campania.
