Brokesie jsou stínomilné, většinou žijí na zemi či na nízké vegetaci bylinného patra lesa. Jejich schopnost je omezena, většinou jsou jednobarevné, zbarvené v odstínech hnědé. To však nesnižuje jejich schopnost maskovat se: tvarem těla i barvou připomínají suchý list. Do podčeledi jsou řazeny tři rody, všechny s českým rodovým jménem brokesie: typový rod Brookesia zahrnuje drobné, maximálně deset centimetrů dlouhé hnědé ještěry s krátkým ocáskem a pichlavými dlaněmi. Všechny druhy jsou endemity ostrova Madagaskar, kde obývají bylinné patro tropického pralesa. Nemálo druhů z tohoto rodu bylo popsáno teprve v posledních třiceti letech. Do rodu Rhampholeon náležejí brokesie žijící v rovníkové Africe; jsou to ještěři s kratším ocasem, pichlavými dlaněmi a dvouklanými drápky, kteří mají na těle ostny tvořené zvětšenými šupinami. Tři východoafrické druhy z tohoto rodu byly v roce 2004 vyčleněny do vlastního rodu Rieppeleon. (cs) The Family Chamaeleonidae was divided into two subfamilies, Brookesiinae and Chamaeleoninae, by Klaver and Böhme in 1986. Under this classification, Brookesiinae included the genera Brookesia and Rhampholeon, as well as the genera later split off from them (Palleon and Rieppeleon). The Brookesiinae are small, often brown in colour, and occur in central Africa and Madagascar. They have terrestrial habits, or may be found in the lower levels of shrubs. Since its erection in 1986, however, the validity of this subfamily designation has been the subject of much debate, although most phylogenetic studies support the notion that the pygmy chameleons of the subfamily Brookesiinae are not a monophyletic group. While some authorities have previously preferred to use the subfamilial classification on the basis of the absence of evidence principal, these authorities later abandoned this subfamilial division, no longer recognizing any subfamilies with the family Chamaeleonidae. In 2015, however, Glaw reworked the subfamilial division by placing only the genera Brookesia and Palleon within the Brookesiinae subfamily, with all other genera being placed in Chamaeleoninae. Ihren Namen verdanken sie ihrem nur rudimentär ausgebildeten Schwanz, der im Gegensatz zu den Echten Chamäleons (Chamaeleoninae) meist nur wenige Millimeter Länge erreicht.Im Gegensatz zu den Echten Chamäleons zeichnen sich Stummelschwanzchamäleons durch unauffällige Farben aus, meist dominieren braun und grün. Zwar sind die Tiere ebenfalls zu Farbänderungen in der Lage, diese bleiben aber aufgrund der geringen Farbpalette vergleichsweise unspektakulär.Stummelschwanzchamäleons stehen anders als echte Chamäleons noch nicht unter Artenschutz, es wird aufgrund der enormen Exporte aus ihren Heimatländern jedoch bereits diskutiert (Stand Herbst 2005). (it) Brookesiinae was een onderfamilie van hagedissen behorend tot de familie kameleons (Chamaeleonidae). Ongeveer een derde van alle kameleons werd tot deze groep gerekend, de verschillende soorten komen voor in delen van zuidelijk Afrika en Madagaskar. De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door en in 1986. De onderfamilie werd ook wel aangeduid met 'onechte kameleons' omdat de meeste vertegenwoordigers atypische kameleons zijn. De meeste soorten zijn bruin van kleur en bodembewonend. De tegenhanger was de onderfamilie Chamaeleoninae, de 'echte kameleons'. Deze laatste groep werd vertegenwoordigd door meer boombewonende soorten die groter worden en meestal groen van kleur zijn. Uit genetisch onderzoek blijkt echter dat beide onderfamilies niet naast elkaar kunnen worden gezien, maar de verschillende groepen van elkaar afstammen.
