Calliopean Society (original) (raw)

The Calliopean Society (the Fraternity of Phi Epsilon Mu) was a literary and debating society at Yale College. The original group operated from 1819 until 1853. A second group by the name was founded in 1950 as a conservative society; it appears to have disbanded in the 1980s. Its name refers to Calliope, the muse of epic poetry and a daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne (memory).
