La flor de mayo o lirio de mayo (Cattleya trianae) pertenece a la familia de las orquídeas, es una planta epífita de hojas carnosas, originaria principalmente de Colombia, aunque su distribución llega hasta Ecuador.

El número de cromosoma diploide de la Cattleya trinae ha estat determinat com 2n=40. El número de cromosoma haploide ha estat determinat com n =20. That year, the National Academy of History of Argentina asked the Latin American countries to participate in an exhibition with the representative flowers of each country. The Colombian government gave the botanist the task to designate the most representative flowering plant of the country. The choice of Cattleya trianae was made for two main reasons: * The lip is yellow, blue and red, in the same way as the Colombian flag. * The species was named after the 19th century Colombian botanist José Jerónimo Triana. The species grows at 1500–2000 meters above sea level, in Cloud forests. It is an endangered species due to habitat destruction. The diploid chromosome number of C. trinae has been determined as 2n = 40. the haploid chromosome number has been determined as n = 20. (fr) De kerstorchidee (Cattleya trianae) is een rechtopstaande, epifytische orchidee met onder elk blad langwerpige, verdikte stengeldelen, die door een vliezige schede worden omgeven. De bladeren zijn riemvormig, leerachtig, langs de middennerf licht gevouwen, 15–25 cm lang en 4–8 cm breed. Er groeien een tot vier bleekroze bloemen per stengel. Ze zijn 15–18 cm groot. De bloemen bestaan uit drie smalle, buitenste bloemdekbladen, twee binnenste, eironde zijwaarts gerichte bloemdekbladen en een buisvormig opgerolde, van boven nog open lip met een karmijnrode, gekroesde zoom en een gele tot oranje hals. De vruchten zijn eivormige tot langwerpige doosvruchten met uitstekende, overlangse ribben. De kerstorchidee is de nationale bloem van Colombia, maar in het wild is hij daar nauwelijks meer te vinden. In Europa bloeit deze orchidee van december tot februari, dus ook tijdens de kerst, waar deze plant zijn Nederlandse naam aan ontleend.
