The Central Area, also called the City Area, and informally The City, is the city centre of Singapore. Located in the south-eastern part of the Central Region, the Central Area consists of eleven constituent planning areas: the Downtown Core, Marina East, Marina South, the Museum Planning Area, Newton, Orchard, Outram, River Valley, Rochor, the Singapore River and Straits View, as defined by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. The term Central Business District (CBD) has also been used to describe most of the Central Area as well, although its boundaries lie within the Downtown Core. The Central Area surrounds the banks of the Singapore River and Marina Bay where the first settlements on the island were established shortly after the arrival of Raffles in 1819. Surrounding the Central Area is the rest of the Central Region. The Central Area shares boundaries with the planning areas of Novena to the north, Kallang to the north and north-east, Tanglin to the north-west and west, Bukit Merah to the south-west and Marine Parade to the east. The south-easternmost limits of the city is enclosed by Marina Barrage, where the mouth of Marina Bay meets the Singapore Strait. Central Area ligt centraal in het zuiden van de Central Region van de stadstaat. Sommige wijken binnen Central Area - zoals Marina East en South, Straits View, Orchard en Museum zijn volledig onbewoond, in andere zoals River Valley, Newton, Downtown Core en Singapore River zijn er een beperkter aantal inwoners. Como o próprio nome indica, forma o centro econômico de Singapura, incluindo os distritos mais importantes, como o Raffles Place, os edifícios administrativos, como a Casa do Parlamento, a Suprema Corte e a Prefeitura, bem como numerosos edifícios comerciais e monumentos culturais. Na mesma área está o porto de Singapura que é um dos mais movimentados do mundo e fica em um ponto estratégico no Oceano Pacífico, na parte sul do estreito de Malaca. De lá saem navios carregados de produtos eletrônicos e de alta tecnologia, que correspondem à principal pauta de exportação do país. A Cidade de Singapura é considerada uma das mais limpas cidades do mundo, já que, segundo a constituição em vigor no país, é expressamente proibido jogar papel no chão ou mascar chiclete (os infratores estão sujeitos a multas pesadas). Além disso, o vandalismo é extremamente condenado pela cultura local que continua muito conservadora.
