The Constable of Normandy was a high office of the Duchy of Normandy, who commanded the Duke of Normandy's army. In 1204, the King of France confiscated the Duchy of Normandy and subsumed it into the crown lands of France. Thereafter, the ducal title was held by several French princes.

Les fonctions principales sont toutefois encore méconnues pour les XIe et XIIe siècles. L'un des premiers connétables connus est Raoul de Gacé, en 1041, après l'assassinat de Gilbert de Brionne, tuteur du jeune duc Guillaume. L'office tend à devenir héréditaire et passe dans la famille de Vernon au cours du XIIe siècle. Richard de La Haye épouse Mathilde de Vernon, dame de Varenguebec, et il reçut à cause de cette terre la charge de Connétable de Normandie.
