It is part of the rural hinterland of Royan and is a hub of commercial activities and crafts. The small town, is grouped around a church dating back to 12th and 13th centuries. Its perfectly preserved market place attracts increasing numbers of tourists, who are brought into the area by its proximity to the resorts on the (La Côte de Beauté). Groupée autour d'une église des XIIe et XIIIe siècles et de halles parfaitement conservées, elle joue de plus en plus la carte du tourisme, secteur favorisé par la proximité des stations balnéaires de la côte de Beauté et par un environnement préservé qui lui vaut d'être classée station verte depuis 2015. Elle accueille chaque année différentes manifestations culturelles, dont le festival Plein Sud, consacré aux cultures d'Afrique. Intégrée à l'aire d'attraction de Royan par l'Insee en 2020, la commune appartient à la communauté d'agglomération Royan Atlantique, structure intercommunale regroupant 81 896 habitants (2014).
