Defne is a new intracity district and second-level municipality in Hatay Province, Turkey. According to Law act no 6360, all Turkish provinces with a population more than 750,000 were declared metropolitan municipality. The law also created new districts within the capital city which have second-level municipalities in addition the metropolitan municipality. Defne is one of them.

Thus after 2014 the present Hatay central district was split into two. A part was named Defne and the name Hatay was reserved for the metropolitan municipality. Defner ist seit der Gebietsreform ab 2014 flächen- und einwohnermäßig identisch mit dem Landkreis. Die antike Vorstadt Daphne (heute der Stadtteil Harbiye) diente als Namensgeber. Durch das Gesetz Nr. 6360 wurde der ehemalige zentrale Landkreis (Merkez İlçe) der Provinz Hatay in zwei Kreise aufgespalten, in Antakya und das kleinere Defne im Südwesten. Hierbei wurden 4 Mahalle von Antakya und 33 Köy der alten Kreise Merkez (Antakya) und Samandağ zu einem neuen Kreis Defne fusioniert. Gleichzeitig wurden alle Dörfer in Mahalle umgewandelt und ebenso wie die Mahalle zum einzigen Ort des neuen Kreises, der gleichnamigen Stadtgemeinde (Belediye) zusammengefasst. Jeder der 37 Mahalle wird von einem Muhtar als obersten Beamten geleitet. Die Tabelle zeigt die Bavölkerungsverteilung am 31. Dezember 2020, also vor der territorialen Änderung. Die Zahl in Klammern gibt die Anzahl der jeweiligen Einheit(en) an. Durchschnittlich 4.326 Menschen lebten Ende 2020 in jedem davon, der bevölkerungsreichste war Çekmece (35.371), gefolgt von Harbiye (27.042) und Sümerler (11.697 Einw.). 34 Mahalle haben weniger als 10.000 (8.681) Einwohner, der geringste nur 90 Einwohner.
