Until the 2015 departmental election, it was known as the General Council of Bouches-du-Rhône (French: Conseil général des Bouches-du-Rhône); accordingly, its members were known as general councillors (conseillers généraux). Fully renewed on 20 and 27 June 2021, the departmental council has been chaired since 2 April 2015 by Martine Vassal of The Republicans.
