D'une durée de quarante minutes, ce métrage fait suite à la série télévisée d'animation Digimon Adventure de 1999, et est le deuxième film Digimon sorti au Japon le 4 mars 2000 pour l'évènement Toei Animation Spring 2000. Le métrage tire son inspiration du film WarGames de 1983. Hosoda cite le métrage comme une influence majeure pour ses films Summer Wars de 2009 et Belle en 2021, les critiques notant de nombreuses similitudes entre les films. Le film est souvent mentionné par les fans francophone sous la dénomination, bien qu'à ce jour non-officielle « Notre jeu de guerre ».
