La dihidrostreptomicina és un derivat de l' estreptomicina que té propietats bactericides. És un antibiòtic aminoglucòsid semisintètic utilitzat en el tractament de la tuberculosi. Actua unint irreversiblement la proteïna S12 a la subunitat ribosòmica bacteriana 30S, després de ser transportat activament a través de la membrana cel·lular, la qual cosa interfereix amb el complex d'iniciació entre l'ARNm i el ribosoma bacterià. Això condueix a la síntesi de proteïnes defectuoses i no funcionals, que provoca la mort de la cèl·lula bacteriana. Provoca ototoxicitat, motiu pel qual ja no s'utilitza en humans. It acts by irreversibly binding the S12 protein in the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, after being actively transported across the cell membrane, which interferes with the initiation complex between the mRNA and the bacterial ribosome. This leads to the synthesis of defective, nonfunctional proteins, which results in the bacterial cell's death. It causes ototoxicity, which is why it is no longer used in humans. (en) La diidrostreptomicina è un aminoglicoside, utilizzato come sale solfato, con azione e indicazioni simili a quelle della streptomicina. Per le sue capacità di ledere il sistema uditivo è ormai raramente impiegata. Viene usata in associazione con altri chemioterapici nella terapia di affezioni intestinali. La diidrostreptomicina viene somministrata per via intramuscolare in dosi equivalenti a 0,5-1 g di diidrostreptomicina. Può causare, come tutti gli antibiotici aminoglicosidici, effetti collaterali a livello vestibolare, cocleare e renale.
