Festival Express je dokumentární film z roku 2003 o cestě vlakem napříč Kanadou, kterou uskutečnily v roce 1970 známé rockové skupiny a osobnosti jako Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band a Delaney & Bonnie & Friends Film využívá kombinování živých nahrávek z koncertů, dále živých nahrávek z vlaku, do toho vstupují tehdejší účastníci s interview, kde komentují dění ve vlaku. Der Festival Express war 1970 eine Konzerttour vom Osten zum Westen Kanadas. Einige der besten Rockbands der damaligen Zeit nahmen daran teil, so auch Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band. Diese Tournee war Anlass einer Dokumentation, in der verschiedene Konzertauftritte, Interviews und auch Eindrücke gezeigt werden. Auf dieser Reise wurden fünf Städte angefahren, um dort die Konzerte aufzuführen. Viele der Musiker blieben in dieser Zeit im Zug, andere erschienen nur bei den Konzerten. So ergaben sich auch eine Jamsession im betrunkenen Zustand zwischen Rick Danko (The Band), Janis Joplin und Jerry García (Grateful Dead), die die Veröffentlichung der Dokumentation nicht mehr miterleben konnten. Während der Tour kam es zu mehreren Zwischenfällen. Ähnlich wie bei Woodstock weigerten sich viele Jugendliche, den Eintritt (16 US-Dollar) zu bezahlen und versuchten, die Konzerte zu stürmen und gegen die Polizisten vorzugehen. Dies führte zu einer negativen Publicity, aber auch dazu, dass spontane freie Konzerte neben den eigentlich geplanten stattfanden. Trotz dieser Vorfälle und trotz der großen Einnahmenverluste wurde die Tournee fortgesetzt. Den Musikern wurde dabei ein Luxus (z. B. eigene Köche im Zug, statt einfache Imbisse) bereitgestellt, der zu der damaligen Zeit noch nicht üblich war. Die Geselligkeit der Künstler untereinander, der ständige Austausch und die Tatsache, dass die Musiker alle Freiheiten hatten, führte zu der Aussage von Kenny Gradney:"It was better than Woodstock, as great as Woodstock was." (Es war besser als Woodstock, so großartig wie Woodstock war). 2003 wurde diese Dokumentation erst bei den internationalen Filmfestspielen in Toronto uraufgeführt, bevor 2004 die DVD im Handel erhältlich war.Die DVD erreichte schnell den ersten Platz bei Online-Verkaufs-Charts wie beispielsweise Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble oder Tower Records und erzielte Einnahmen in Höhe von 1,2 Millionen US-Dollar. Festival Express is a 2003 documentary film about the 1970 train tour of the same name across Canada taken by some of North America's most popular rock bands, including the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Buddy Guy, Flying Burrito Bros, Ian & Sylvia's Great Speckled Bird, Mountain and Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. The film combines footage of the 1970 concerts and on the train, interspersed with contemporary recollections of the tour by its participants. The film, released by THINKFilm, was produced by Gavin Poolman (son of the original 1970 film shoot's producer, Willem Poolman) together with John Trapman, and directed by double Grammy Award-winner Bob Smeaton, with music produced by Eddie Kramer and featuring original footage shot in 1970 by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Peter Biziou. The original 1970 footage was filmed by director Frank Cvitanovich. A DVD release followed the film's 2003 theatrical run. (en)

Conçu au départ pour capitaliser sur le nouvel engouement pour les festivals de musique présentant de nombreux artistes sur plusieurs jours, le Festival Express reste encore aujourd'hui le concert le plus long de toute l'histoire de la musique rock jamais organisé, le magazine Rolling Stone allant jusqu'à le surnommer « The Million Dollar Bash ». Le documentaire paraît en DVD le 24 juillet 2004 aux États-Unis, soit près de trente-cinq ans après les événements. (fr)

Foi produzido por Gavin Poolman (filho do produtor original do projeto em 1970, Willem Poolman) e John Trapman, com direção de Bob Smeaton.
