Das Gauss Centre for Supercomputing e. V. (GCS) dient dem Zusammenschluss der drei nationalen Höchstleistungsrechenzentren in Deutschland: dem Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) im Rahmen des John von Neumann-Instituts für Computing (NIC) in Jülich, dem Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ) in Garching bei München und dem Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Stuttgart (HLRS). Unterstützt wird das GCS durch entsprechende Projektförderung vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung und den Wissenschaftsministerien der Länder Baden-Württemberg, Bayern und Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Seit 2012 sind in jedem der drei GCS-Mitgliedszentren HLRS, JSC und LRZ Computersysteme installiert, die mit Rechengeschwindigkeiten im Petaflops-Bereich aufwarten. In Summe verfügt das GCS über eine Rechenleistung von mehr als 80 Petaflops, wodurch Forschern und Entwicklern aus allen wissenschaftlichen Bereichen und Vertretern der Industrie die mit Abstand leistungsfähigste Systeminfrastruktur in ganz Europa zur Verfügung steht. Unterstützt wird das GCS durch entsprechende Projektförderung vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung und den Wissenschaftsministerien der Länder Baden-Württemberg, Bayern und Nordrhein-Westfalen. Vorstandsvorsitzender ist Thomas Lippert (JSC). Vice Chairmen sind Dieter Kranzlmüller (LRZ) und Michael M. Resch (Universität Stuttgart). Geschäftsführer und Leiter des Projektbüros in Bonn ist Claus Axel Müller. Der Hauptsitz des GCS befindet sich in Berlin. (de) The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) combines the three national supercomputing centres HLRS (High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart), JSC (Jülich Supercomputing Centre), and LRZ (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, Garching near Munich) into Germany’s Tier-0 supercomputing institution. Each GCS member centre host supercomputers well beyond the 10 Petaflops performance mark. Concertedly, the three centres provide the largest and most powerful supercomputing infrastructure in all of Europe to serve a wide range of industrial and research activities in various disciplines. They also provide top-class training and education for the national as well as the European High Performance Computing (HPC) community. GCS is the German member of PRACE (Partnership for Advance Computing in Europe), an international non-profit association consisting of 25 member countries, whose representative organizations create a pan-European supercomputing infrastructure, providing access to computing and data management resources and services for large-scale scientific and engineering applications at the highest performance level.
