Generation R is a prospective, population based cohort study from fetal life until young adulthood in a multi-ethnic urban population in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The study is designed to identify early environmental and genetic causes of normal and abnormal growth, development and health. Eventually, results forthcoming from the Generation R Study have to contribute to the development of strategies for optimizing health and healthcare for pregnant women and children. The study focuses on five primary areas of research:

Het onderzoek is opgezet om vroege genetische en omgevingsfactoren te identificeren die van invloed zijn op de optimale en suboptimale groei, ontwikkeling en gezondheid. De resultaten worden gebruikt voor het optimaliseren van de gezondheidszorg voor zwangere vrouwen en kinderen. Generation R wordt uitgevoerd door het Erasmus MC, de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam en het Sophia Kinderziekenhuis in samenwerking met de GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond. Het onderzoek richt zich op vijf onderzoeksgebieden: 1. * Groei en lichamelijke ontwikkeling 2. * Gedrag en cognitieve ontwikkeling 3. * Astma en atopie 4. * Ziekten op de kinderleeftijd 5. * Gezondheid en gezondheidszorg Het onderzoek kan gezien worden als een vervolg op het onderzoek Gedrag in Beeld dat twee decennia eerder startte.
