Gillham code is a zero-padded 12-bit binary code using a parallel nine- to eleven-wire interface, the Gillham interface, that is used to transmit uncorrected barometric altitude between an encoding altimeter or analog air data computer and a digital transponder. It is a modified form of a Gray code and is sometimes referred to simply as a "Gray code" in avionics literature.

Der Code ist von der Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in seinem Aufbau festgelegt. Der Gillham-Code ist wie jeder Gray-Code ein „single step code“ (engl.: Ein-Schritt-Code). Das bedeutet, dass sich bei der Binärdarstellung der Höheninformation benachbarte Höhenstufen immer nur einer einzigen binären Stelle unterscheiden. Sollte sich bei der Übertragung mehr als eine Stelle geändert haben, kann der Wert am Empfänger verworfen werden, da der letzte erhaltene Wert dann fehlerhaft war. Die Höhenangabe wird in der Luftfahrt traditionell in der veralteten Längeneinheit Fuß (ft) vorgenommen, wobei ein Fuß 0,3048 m entspricht. Die dabei übertragenden Werte reichen von −365,76 m bis +38618,16 m in Schritten zu 30,48 m. L'utilisation d'un transpondeur Mode C à bord d'un aéronef nécessite en effet la présence d'un encodeur d'altitude, également appelé Alticodeur, afin d'informer les moyens du contrôle du trafic aérien de l'altitude non corrigée de l'aéronef. L'Alticodeur délivre l'altitude non corrigée de l'aéronef au transpondeur sous la forme d'une suite de 11 bits codé Gillham. C'est l'OACI qui définit l'utilisation de ce code (Annexe 10, volume IV) afin de standardiser la communication entre l'Alticodeur et le transpondeur. De par sa ressemblance ce code est parfois faussement appelé code de Gray.
