Green logistics describes all attempts to measure and minimize the ecological impact of logistics activities. This includes all activities of the forward and reverse flows of products, information and services between the point of origin and the point of consumption. It is the aim to create a sustainable company value using a balance of economic and environmental efficiency. Green logistics has its origin in the mid 1980s and was a concept to characterize logistics systems and approaches that use advanced technology and equipment to minimize environmental damage during operations.

Die Umweltrelevanz der Logistik zeigt sich durch Abgasemissionen, Wasser- und Bodenbelastungen, Lärm, Flächenverbrauch und Unfälle beim Transport. Von ökologieorientierter Logistik im engeren Sinne wird gesprochen, sofern sie vergleichsweise umweltfreundlich ist (Umweltschutz in der Logistik). Nimmt die Logistik hingegen Aufgaben der Entsorgung wahr, bezeichnet man dies als ökologieorientierte Logistikleistung im weiteren Sinne (Logistik im Umweltschutz). El sistema de destino "verde" de logística se lleva a cabo a través de un equilibrio entre la eficiencia económica y ecológica, y, la creación de valor sostenible para sus accionistas, observando y evaluando los plazos tanto medios como largos. Durante la segunda conferencia internacional de inteligencia Humano-Máquina Sistemas y Cibernética, se establece que, de acuerdo con las características de producción, consumo y deshecho, la Logística Verde es el modelo tradicional de la economía; dejando al almacenamiento y degradación del medio ambiente, haciendo esto un obstáculo al desarrollo de algunos países. La economía circular trata de hacer más eficiente el uso y reciclaje de los recursos, para esto la logística tiene que tomar en cuenta la problemática ambiental y así crear un sistema que encaje a la perfección con el medio ambiente. Según la Organización de las Naciones Unidas, los trabajos verdes se pueden definir de la siguiente manera: “son los que reducen el impacto ambiental de las empresas y los sectores económicos, hasta alcanzar en definitiva niveles sostenibles.
