La gregoryita és un mineral de la classe dels carbonats. Rep el seu nom del professor John Walter Gregory (1864–1932), de les universitats de Melbourne i Glasgow, qui va completar els primers estudis científics sobre l'activitat volcànica i l'estructura del sistema del Rift d'Àfrica.

Gregoryit findet sich in Form von verrundeten Kristallen (Porphyroklasten) bzw. Phänokristen in einem Natrokarbonatit. Die Typlokalität des Gregoryits ist der weltweit einzige aktive Karbonatit-Vulkan Ol Doinyo Lengai (Koordinaten des Vulkans Ol Doinyo Lengai) im Distrikt Ngorongoro in der Region Arusha im nördlichen Tansania. (de) Gregoryite is an anhydrous carbonate mineral that is rich in potassium and sodium with the chemical formula (Na2,K2,Ca)CO3. It is one of the two main ingredients of natrocarbonatite, found naturally in the lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, the other being nyerereite. Because of its anhydrous nature, gregoryite reacts quickly with the environment, causing the dark lava to be converted to white substance within hours. Gregoryite was first described in 1980 and named after the British geologist and author John Walter Gregory (1864–1932), who studied the East African Rift Valley.
